3 reasons why you should never trust ABS

Letter to the Editor:

Two days ago, Prime Minister Gaston Browne shared a post on his Facebook page.

It stated: “Never place all your trust in a single news source.” Many prominent Caribbean historians will also warn you against believing a single story.

If the General Manager of ABS had her way, you’d be listening to a single story, the ABS way.

Here are three reasons why you should never trust ABS news.

One sided- Anyone listening to ABS news should know that they are only getting half the news, from the government side. I read a comment from the General Manager of ABS under a post by an ABLP Minister. She was quick to trash the other media houses, but I wish to say to her that it is on these media houses that we get all aides and we TRUST them more for their unbiased and balanced reporting. For ABS, if the government minister doesn’t say it, it isn’t true. Their idea of factual news is anything that comes out of Melford and Cutie’s mouth.

Regular people have no voice on ABS- The role of the media is to stand up to the powerful isn the name of the powerless. Well not on ABS, say anything against the minister and you get the boot from the lady who manages the social media pages. There is a lack of reporting on stories that matter to average working and unemployed people. The angle is always the government angle and not the people’s concern. Two thirds of the things that actually happen in Antigua are not reported on ABS, take the underreporting of crime for example, take the people’s cry over the high cost of living for example. Do you see ABS’ news addressing this on the front burner.

Unethical treatment of staff- You can trust ABS’ management to treat staff like sh*t. Just name it, anything from unwarranted and unjustified disciplinary action to incentive remarks, withholding hard earned increases and overtime pay to an overall poor working condition.

I can’t wait for Pointe TV so the vicious monopoly funded by taxpayers to end. You’d think you’d be getting good representation from the entity that you fund right? It is no wonder that their viewership has dropped. They boast of 100k plus Facebookers but cant get 600 people to watch their prime time news cast live.

What a shame. A dam shame. Thanks to the Observer and Antigua Newsroom for giving up the other side, standing up for the powerless and giving us a voice.

  1. Jumbee_Picknee was just vibing on this #caption of an employee at ABS, as I was about to make a comment on another trending story here on ANR regarding management/employees issues at ABS.

We know, that Jamaica has its WHITE WITCH of Rose Hall.
Will the alleged, #She_Devil and company who’re part of the upper management of ABS become
    #La_Jabalese_Krew of Scott’s Hill, haunting that Hill⁉️☠️☠️☦️❌😇

  2. Why is that picture looking like a mad woman? A man wakes up and sees a face like that in bed would get a heart attack.

  3. Wishing ABS all the best. I hope they will have some team building activities that will help them to work better together.
From a viewer’s point of view, there have been some improvement in content over the years. Some additional improvements that I would like:
    1) I would prefer a male and female anchor team for the news or just a different individual main presenter each evening either male or female. I find 2 males or 2 females co-anchoring boring or incomplete for some reason.
    2) The news tone should be small island style – not too melodramatic but also not too laid back.
    3) Kids shows should not have grown up advertisements e.g. no wild fete advertisements in the middle of a kids show.
    4) ABS needs to put out a firestick app.
    5) They also need to get more creative with content – not only interviews and local live shows but our talented regional creatives could produce additional entertainment shows together – not just the ones about carnival etc. but maybe also some historical shows, regional cooking shows, dramas and comedies (not just about cheating though), family shows, kids shows etc. etc.

    • @Teamwork…Wild fetes indeed. I was surprised to see an advertisement for some Island Fest last week and when they showed one of the performing artiste the image was one of him smoking. Irony of all this also is that the show was supported by the GOAB.

    • @Teqmwork…greetings! Greetings! A wah a guarne⁉️

I do agree with your observations, sentiments and recommendations!
Fortunately, there’s room for growth, and we had better accept the fact, that growth is not only inevitable, it’s a required for advancement along with its counterpart #change.
Unfortunately, as you can tell from many of the comments, this #toxic work environment is entrenched in the Public Sector. Not all of it, I must add. Personally, I have witnessed on many occasions, I have experienced on many occasions, the “Jumbee” of brashness, arrogance, dun_K_damn in several Government Agencies.

Again, a well thought out reasoning! A part of our solution is to EXORCISE de JUMBEE dat a haunt re Punlic Sector!

      Me guarne…

  4. Abs, point Fm and observer radio are All one sided . Except for the Estly morning program with Daren there are all one sided .

  5. Few things.
    1) if Gaston is now saying don’t only have one view / media. Why did we not have multiple people talking about the Vaccine? Why was anyone opposed to it shot down?
    2) saying come to his source is like…. I don’t know…. Hitler, Kim Jong-Il and of course his handlers the CCP. Full dictatorship
ABS might stand for Absolute BullShit
But it’s better to have more sources of media than just one tan by the dictator

  6. Apparently the ABLP administration is an equal opportunity employer, which is great. Here we have a woman holding a multiple high positions within its administration and as well as she seems to be of “special needs”.

It is a dastardly shame that they do not have being a competitor within the international Special Olympics. I am certain with her competing against the others of her caliber, she will definitely do all that can be done to bring home gold for this nation within the Special Olympics.

    Kudos again for such structure.
