The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is pleased to announce that Grantley Edwards has been selected as the 2021 Azerbaijan Scholarship recipient.

Born and raised in Parham Town, Edwards’ impressive track record include being in the Top 33 in the Grade 6 National Assessment School and later earning a Silver Award for The Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examination.

Professionally, he currently works in compliance and, as such, will be studying Business Management at the Baku State University.

Moreover, Edwards attributes his success, motivation, and discipline to his mother and acknowledges the influential guidance that his employer and role model Mr Kem Warner played in his personal development.

Yesterday, Grantley Edwards joined Dr Drickesha Aska, 2019 scholarship recipient, who is completing a residency programme at the Azerbaijan Medical University, in an audience with the Honourable E.P. Chet Greene, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Immigration, to express their gratitude and share their experiences and academic goals.

Minister Greene expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Republic of Azerbaijan for making the scholarship available to Antiguans and Barbudans. He then congratulated Edwards on being this year’s scholarship recipient and noted that though Azerbaijan is quite some distance away, the journey to success is one within grasp.

He also thanked Dr Aska for being a trailblazer, setting a high standard of achievement for future Antiguan and Barbudan recipients. Minister Greene further admonished that, “our national expectation is that you go to Azerbaijan to study, be successful, return to make your contributions to our national development and your family, and be a role model to peers and younger generations who will see higher education as a tool for self-empowerment.”

This initiative was made possible through the Azerbaijan International Development Agency (AIDA) and the Government of Antigua and Barbuda, led by the Antigua and Barbuda High Commission in the United Kingdom. The scholarship is tenured for university programmes in Azerbaijan for undergraduate, graduate (taught and research) and general medicine and residency. It covers all expenses including, flights, full tuition, allowances, and accommodation.

The opening of the next round of applications will be announced in the last quarter of this year.
