POINTE XPRESS: A fourteen year old boy remains warded at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre with
injuries following a traffic accident on Easter Saturday.

The youth – Dario Thompson – was the passenger in a vehicle – a Toyota Vitz,
which at the time was being driven by 24-year-old Gerard Byron of Clare Hall.

Reports are that Byron lost control of the vehicle, and it slammed into a utility pole
in the Valley Church area, breaking it in two.

The accident happened atapproximately 11:40 on Saturday morning.

They were rushed to the SLBMC where Byron was treated for his injuries and
discharged sometime later.

However, his passenger, Thompson was kept by the
doctors for further observation as he is suspected to have suffered internal injuries
from the impact of the accident.

Head of the Traffic Department, Superintendent Elson Quammie said the Valley
Church accident is one of ten reported to the department over the long Easter
Holiday weekend.

There were no accidents on Good Friday, but there were five on
Saturday, two on Sunday and three on Monday.

The Valley Church accident was the only one that resulted in injuries.

Supt. Quammie said there were less accidents this year compared with previous
years, and he credits the proactive actions of the police for this development.

He said the police implemented a plan to increase their presence on the road during
the holidays and especially after the fetes that happened on the weekend.

These, he believes, are what contributed to the fall in Easter Weekend accidents. “Our
presence on the road kept accidents to a minimum. It is clear that the police
vigilance worked,” he remarked.
