Celebrating Excellence: 100% Pass Rate for RENR Licensure Examination by Cohort 2 Nursing Students at UWI Five Islands Campus

By Mrs. Ronis Joseph-Browne, Lecturer, Head (SoHBs)

The University of the West Indies (UWI) Five Islands Campus School of Health and Behavioural Sciences proudly announces the remarkable achievement of its second cohort of nursing students in the Regional Examination for Nurses Registration (RENR) general nurse training licensure.

All students who attempted this examination in October 2024 achieved a 100% pass rate, a testament to their hard work, dedication, and the high standards the nursing program upholds.

This milestone is particularly significant as these students began their Bachelor of Science in Nursing journey during the height of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. Enrolling in a newly established four-year nursing program, they faced unprecedented challenges, including the rapid shift to online learning, limited in-person interactions, and disruptions in clinical training. Despite these hurdles, they persevered, demonstrating resilience and a commitment to their education.

The program achieved a graduation rate of 93% for this cohort, marking an improvement from the inaugural cohort’s 85% success rate. This progress highlights the impact of strengthened academic support, an innovative curriculum, and dedicated mentorship from the School of Health and Behavioural Sciences.

Among this cohort emerged the light of hope for the campus—the UWI Five Islands Campus 2024 valedictorian, Ms. Okelia McFarlene. Her outstanding academic performance, leadership, and dedication exemplify the program’s core values. Ms. McFarlene’s accomplishments inspire both her peers and future students, standing as a symbol of excellence and determination. Hip, Hip, hurray!

The success of Cohort 2 reflects the collaborative effort of students and faculty. The comprehensive training provided by the program blends rigorous academic coursework with practical clinical experiences, preparing graduates to meet the demands of modern healthcare.

This accomplishment aligns with UWI Five Islands Campus’s mission to advance healthcare in the Caribbean through education, research, and community engagement. It reaffirms the campus’s dedication to fostering leaders in healthcare. This is a testament to their perseverance, the transformative power of quality education, and readiness to make meaningful contributions

to healthcare in the region and beyond.
