Senator Michael Joseph has commended the government’s initiatives to tackle youth crime and violence, citing a significant reduction in youth-related offenses as a direct outcome of these efforts.
“We have to create bridges to bring individuals together so that we can resolve these issues,” Senator Joseph said during the budget debate. He highlighted the Prime Minister’s direct engagement with local gangs as a crucial step.
“Look at the result—we’ve had a significant reduction in youth crime and violence. Isn’t this a success?”
The senator called for continued focus on rehabilitation over punitive measures.
“We cannot ostracize young people no matter what. Everyone in this house has made mistakes, but we must find ways to bring them back,” he said.
Senator Joseph noted the need for innovative approaches to address these challenges.
“We live in a world now where we cannot continue to operate with traditional norms and practices. Nothing is textbook anymore,” he said.
According to the senator, the government’s programs have provided safe environments and alternative paths for at-risk youth, contributing to the positive outcomes seen so far.
“This is about investing in our youth and ensuring a better future for them and the country as a whole,” Senator Joseph concluded.
