Young Antiguan Among Caribbean Climate Justice Leaders COP29 Delegation

Genesis Whitlock, an environmental science and economics student at Dickinson College, is among eight young delegates selected by the Caribbean Climate Justice Leaders Academy to attend COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan in November. This fully-funded opportunity, sponsored by Island Innovation, empowers Whitlock to advocate for climate justice and sustainability for Caribbean island communities.

In her final year of studies, Whitlock conducts research on climate justice across various policy levels, drawing from her transformative experience studying the Amazon rainforest in Peru.

Passionate about addressing the Caribbean’s underrepresentation in climate discourse, she aims to enhance communication and collaboration among environmental activists.

Growing up tending to her grandmother’s garden, Genesis learned she was not merely observing an ecosystem but was an integral part of it. This formative experience sparked a deep curiosity about ecosystems and the importance of cultivating sustainable relationships.

In her final year of studies at Dickenson College, Genesis conducts research on climate justice at various policy levels.

Inspired by a transformative study abroad agricultural experience, in the Amazon rainforest in Peru in 2023, Genesis is committed to addressing the Caribbean’s underrepresentation in climate discussions, by improving communication and collaboration among activists.

As a farmer, storyteller, activist, and researcher, Genesis continues to integrate diverse insights to promote a sustainable future for the Caribbean, focusing on issues like gender justice and food insecurity within the climate justice framework.
