The International Court of Justice (ICJ) will issue its advisory opinion on states’ legal obligations concerning climate change today at 3pm.

The ruling, to be delivered by ICJ President Judge Iwasawa Yuji, follows submissions from over 100 countries and organisations. Small island developing states, including Antigua and Barbuda, played a key role in the process.

The request for the opinion was initiated by Vanuatu, with Antigua and Barbuda among its leading supporters. It seeks clarity on how international law compels states to act on climate change.

Speaking during the December hearings, Prime Minister Gaston Browne warned of the existential threat facing island nations. “We seek this advisory opinion not to point fingers but to clarify state obligations before the clock on our survival runs out,” he said.

Crown Counsel Zachary Phillips also argued that wealthier nations should not use the Paris Agreement as a shield against broader climate responsibilities.

  1. Yes, put money in an international kitty to keep the sun from being hot. It’s a scam but hope we get some of the money.

  2. This opinion acknowledges the disproportionate impact of climate change on vulnerable nations. It’s a huge step towards ensuring that those historically responsible for emissions bear their legal obligations.

  3. As a small islander, this hits home. We contribute the least to climate change but suffer the most. It’s time the world listened.

  4. Love seeing leaders like PM Browne and young legal minds like Zachary Phillips making history. This is how change starts.
