Bird-Browne says Works Ministry will push for stricter road-safety standards in 2026

Works Minister Maria Bird-Browne says the government will introduce stronger road-safety standards in 2026 as part of a wider overhaul of the country’s infrastructure, with new emphasis on signage, lane markings, and improved road-use management.

In her Budget Debate presentation, the minister said the Works Ministry will be expanding its focus beyond major construction to include measures aimed at reducing accidents and improving the overall safety of road users.

The announcement comes amid growing public calls for clearer signage, more visible lane demarcations, and better-organised traffic-flow systems across both urban and rural communities.

Bird-Browne outlined plans for improved road signage to help motorists navigate more safely, especially in areas where outdated or missing signs have contributed to confusion and unsafe driving conditions.

She also indicated that the ministry will prioritise new lane markings and regular maintenance of existing ones to ensure better visibility, particularly at night and in rainy weather.

The minister said the 2026 work programme will include a structured review of high-traffic corridors, intersections and areas where pedestrian and vehicular conflicts are more common.

The objective, she said, is to develop a more organised approach to road-use management and integrate safety features into all new roadworks undertaken by the ministry.

The plans form part of a broader push to modernise national infrastructure and improve the overall road experience for drivers, pedestrians and public-transport operators.

Bird-Browne said the ministry intends to enforce higher standards across all phases of road development, from design to execution and long-term maintenance.

The 2026 infrastructure agenda is expected to include coordinated work between the Ministry of Works, law-enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to ensure that safety improvements are consistent and sustained across the island.
