A working group, led by Ambassador Clarence E. Pilgrim, has been formed to develop policy guidelines for Antigua and Barbuda’s baking sector, aiming to register all bakers and bakeries.
The group seeks to establish a bakers’ association, enhance industry standards, and ensure fair trade.
It will review regulations, assess current practices, and consult stakeholders to shape a National Baking Policy in Antigua and Barbuda focused on sustainability, fair trade, and consumer protection.
Co-chair Nadia James emphasized the policy’s regulatory, health, and economic considerations, while Chief Health Inspector Daryl Spencer noted the development of specialized training for bakers.

will the group also address the challenges faced by small, local bakers?
Glad to see efforts toward regulation, but will the process be transparent and inclusive of all stakeholders? 👩🍳🤝
I hope it doesn’t stifle creativity and innovation in baking.
This could improve the industry significantly, but will there be enough support for bakeries to adapt? 🏪🔧
This could help elevate the baking sector—let’s ensure local businesses aren’t burdened with excessive costs. 💰🍞
will there be clear guidelines and timelines for the regulation process?
Hope the regulation will let us stop getting those half baked tough Brownie bread
Please DO NOT introduce any of those chemical and unnatural ingredients, compulsory or optional. I don’t eat bread and most pastries when I go to the US because the ingredients list is filled with “lab food” that I can’t even pronounce. Also, I know that we love to adopt the things that America do but just note that many ingredients, (not limited to baked goods) that America uses are actually banned in many European countries and other places. Continue to keep these ingredients out of our stomachs.
