In recognition of World Water Day 2026, the EcoShores Sustainable Futures Network (ESFN) and its partners are convening a “Women & Water: Community Consultation,” a focused engagement under its Climate and Care Nexus initiative. This session will provide a safe, inclusive space for women and girls to openly explore how water access, climate change, and gender-related challenges shape their daily lives and environment.
This consultation invites participants to share their lived experiences, perspectives, and ideas, contributing directly to community-driven solutions that reflect real needs on the ground. ESFN emphasizes that this will be a critical opportunity to influence research, policy, and program development in Antigua and Barbuda.
Women’s voices remain underrepresented in environmental decision-making, despite being disproportionately affected by water insecurity and climate impacts. This consultation ensures that those affected are at the center of identifying challenges and designing solutions. By participating, attendees will help shape practical, inclusive research and programs that can strengthen community resilience and improve everyday realities.
Insights gathered from this consultation will contribute to locally-led research and programs, forming part of a broader evidence base to inform national and regional discussions. ESFN and its partners will use the findings to support initiatives and activities across four (4) critical areas:
Care Economy: Will highlight how water access directly affects both paid and unpaid care work, including household responsibilities such as cooking, cleaning, child care, and caregiving.
Women’s Health: Will explore the connections between water quality, sanitation, climate stress, and women’s physical, mental, maternal, and menstrual health. This will support responsive health interventions grounded in lived experiences.
Opportunity Gaps: Will examine how water, environmental, and climate challenges limit women’s access to education, employment, and economic participation, helping to identify pathways to more equitable opportunities.
Locally-Led Community Research and Programs: This consultation reinforces ESFN’s and its partners’ commitment to community-driven development by ensuring that research and program design are informed by the voices, knowledge, and priorities of local women and girls in various communities.
ESFN encourages women from all communities and backgrounds to attend and actively participate. Every story shared and idea contributed will play a role in shaping solutions that are inclusive, practical, and sustainable.
EcoShores Sustainable Futures Network appreciates the support of partners like Jim Daddy & Sons Ltd., whose sponsorship will provide free water to one participant during the consultation. While this contribution highlights the importance of accessible resources in community engagement, other participants will receive an honorarium in recognition of their time, knowledge, and lived experience they share. Together these gestures reflect the importance of valuing community voices and strengthening the connection between environmental care, equity and resilience
“This initiative is about centering women’s voices in climate and development conversations,” said an ESFN representative. “By listening to lived experiences, we can design better systems of care, improve health outcomes, and close opportunity gaps in meaningful ways.”
