WiMAC Marks World Maritime Day With Call to Protect Oceans and Advance Gender Equity
The Women in Maritime Association, Caribbean (WiMAC) has joined the global maritime community in observing World Maritime Day, celebrated this year under the theme “Our Ocean, Our Opportunity, Our Obligation.”
Highlighting the ocean’s central role in connecting people, sustaining economies, and shaping Caribbean identity, WiMAC President Dr. Evette Smith Johnson underscored the importance of safeguarding marine resources while ensuring inclusivity in maritime leadership.
“Happy World Maritime Day! Under the theme ‘Our Ocean, Our Opportunity, Our Obligation,’ WiMAC celebrates the sea that sustains, connects, and inspires our Caribbean. Together, we must protect it, embrace opportunities, and ensure women’s equal role in shaping the maritime future,” Dr. Smith Johnson said in her message.

WiMAC emphasized that with opportunity comes responsibility—to protect the marine environment, embrace sustainable development, and advance the participation of women across all levels of the maritime sector. The association noted that gender equity strengthens innovation, resilience, and long-term growth.
The group called on governments, industry players, and communities to work collectively to secure a sustainable and prosperous future for generations to come, stressing that responsible stewardship of the ocean is essential not only for livelihoods but also for resilience in the face of global challenges.
