Antigua Lags Behind In Female Representation in Parliament

SOURCE: CARISTATS- From Dominica’s 38% to Antigua’s 6%: How CARICOM nations vary in female political representation

Parliamentary inclusion of women can provide useful insights into gender equality progress within the CARICOM region. Dominica, leading the way with 38% of parliamentary seats held by women in 2023, is followed closely by Guyana at 37%, both surpassing the Latin America and Caribbean average of 36%.

However, the regional picture is far from uniform. Grenada and St. Kitts and Nevis also stand out with 31%, but countries like Suriname, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago hover at 29%, aligning with the global average of 27%.

Meanwhile, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, The Bahamas, Belize, and others fall alarmingly short, with Antigua and Barbuda at just 6%

  1. Why don’t Man Cow throw her hat in the ring??? She can help achieve gender parity in politics. After all bragging that she have “MORE BALLS” than the weak UPP “men”

  2. Women’s voices are essential in shaping the policies that affect us all, and it’s about time that more women are given equal opportunities to serve in decision-making positions. However, while the discussion is necessary, it’s crucial that the government and political parties take proactive steps to address this disparity. Promoting women to leadership roles is not just about equality; it’s about creating a more balanced, inclusive political system that truly reflects the diversity of our society.

  3. Are women being discouraged from running due to the political culture or lack of support? The focus should not only be on the numbers but also on creating an environment where women are genuinely empowered to participate and succeed in politics. Until we address the systemic barriers that hinder female involvement, true progress will be limited.

  5. Jacqui Quinn and Shawn Nicholas should both put their hats back into the ring. BOTH are excellent orators with the highest quality of excellence. Both now have their PhD’s. If UPP were to get these 2 back into the fold (one way or the other), UPP could once again be an opposition to match.

  6. Here we go again with another none issue article insisting that we have a problem that doesn’t exist?

Who and what prevents a woman or any female from entering politics in our region?

The political landscape both home and abroad requires an individual(male or female) who:
    – Has the capacity to think critically and articulate their ideas and strategies to gain supporters
    – Is a hard worker despite getting no immediate credit at times
    – Is not easily embarrassed and willing to undergo scrutiny by the public at large
    – Is passionate about the betterment of their constituency / country
    – Has a vision / strategy to better their country / communities and can actually execute it
    – etc

Nothings prevents any women / female from aspiring and pursuing a career in politics.
Should females just be given political positions just so our numbers look good?? I mean who writes this shit?!

Why don’t you bemoan the fact that around 98 percent of nurses are females. You don’t think we need more male influences in the health care field? Or the fact that the construction field is saturated with males, could definitely use some females there. SMH

  7. UPP dash way Gladys Potter.

Silly little Jermain Edwards learned the hard way that it’s not good to undermine another woman. Now look where she end up??? Rejected by Gisele Isaac-Arrindell and crying foul….tried to look sympathy by “resigning”
