A 27-year-old woman is recovering after she was mauled by four pit bulls at a family home, just days before she was scheduled to graduate from the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus.
Relatives say Shabo Nedwell was visiting the home on Saturday afternoon when the attack occurred.
According to a family member who contacted Antigua News Room, Nedwell was in the living room speaking with her uncle when the dogs rushed out from the hallway and attacked her.

“She sustained injuries on her legs, hands, and half of her lip is gone,” the relative said. “This could have been the end of her life.”
Despite her injuries, Nedwell reportedly managed to drive herself to the hospital, where she received stitches to her leg and lip. Doctors have advised that she will need reconstructive surgery once the stitches in her lip heal.
Family members say the pit bulls belong to Nedwell’s aunt, who had reportedly been warned several times about keeping the dogs inside the house. “There have been several complaints because they like to rush at people and nothing has been done,” the family member said.
The relative also alleged that after the incident, the aunt removed the dogs from the property and hid them.
Neighbors reportedly intervened to pull Nedwell out of the house during the attack.
Nedwell, who recently completed her Bachelor of Science in Accounting, had been preparing to walk the graduation stage this weekend. Her cousin said she is now unable to attend the ceremony. “She cannot walk, barely talk, she can barely eat and she is traumatized,” the family member said.
The family is calling on authorities to locate and remove the dogs to prevent further attacks. Police have not yet confirmed whether an investigation is underway.

Ain’t pit bulls illegal dogs? I saw some people have them roaming the streets with no restraint.
I can find them for you Ms Nedwell because they need to be killed.
The dogs must be euthanized. They’re not domesticated enough to live amongst people and need to be put down. I’m so very sorry this happened to the young lady! I don’t know her but I’m in the medical field and can’t even imagine the trauma she feels. I pray her recovery is swift, without infection and that the physician administered a Tdap shot, plus IM Rocephin and sent home with a Z-pack or Doxycycline and Prednisone pack for inflammation. Tramadol for pain. Praying for your recovery and congratulations on your accomplishments.
I don’t understand this like this doesn’t make sense!!
1. Why did she have to drive her own self to the hospital after such an excruciating attack?
2. Why aunty so concerned about her dogs more than family unless her dogs are her kids and not pets?
3. Why the dogs were in the house and not sectioned off from the meeting room where she knows she go have ppl in?
4. Please to charge miss lady “aunty” for negligence and third degree assault. If this leads to death then manslaughter.
5. All the dogs should be put down……
Protection by all means. This is the fear of Wadadli mad crime wave. Sorry it was a family member instead of one a them lowlife.
Very sad story. Hope the victim makes a full recovery. Those dogs should be put down
Pray you recover both mentally and physically.
Youvwere speaking to uncle when this happened. Uncle has no power over the dogs? He didn’t see them? Does he live there? Does uncle have dogs for dog fighting? Why aunty alone being blamed?
Find them and put them down.
Why uncle didn’t drive you? Can’t he drive? Is he too old?
Congratulations on your accomplishments
They have the temperament to kill so something need to be done urgently so they never ever hurt anyone again and the owner need to compensate the young lady let’s go to court and let her get her just reward for her pain and suffering it’s time to put those dogs down no it’s or but’s and save lives
I have said this often before and will say it again (despite the vitriol from so called “animal lovers”) pitbulls should not be kept as pets. If you read news reports from several countries, you will realise that thus happens almost daily.
Often these digs are kept simply for bragging rights!
I am a lover of dogs but when people have fierce, vicious & aggressive dogs, they must be securely tied, locked away or removed from where they might become entangled with anyone. The responsibility rests with the owners of the dogs to make certain that they do not show any aggression and hostility against anyone at anytime. What can be worst than being attacked in a dwelling house by vicious dogs. The truth is, it is not everyone who owns dogs that knows how to properly care for them. This attack sounds major and pretty serious.
This is one dog I don’t intend to have at my yard i don’t trust them one bit but they should be put down they are threat to the community
It’s amazing to me that most people are blaming the dogs and ready to kill the dogs. It is unfortunate and tragic that this happened to the young lady and I wish her a speedy recovery. However, blame is 1000% on the owner. The dogs did what dogs are supposed to do, protect the property. There is not one dog I know, that stops and asks for ID or DNA sample to see if the person they deem to be an “intruder”, is family or not.
What exactly did the dogs do wrong apart from act like a dog? We need to stop punishing animals for having bad and irresponsible owners. People also need to understand that certain people should not have certain breeds of dogs because they don’t have the personality to control or train that particular breed. Way to often, dogs are given bad names because the owner can’t control a chihuahua farless a pit bull or bull mastiff etc. The owner should be charged and held responsible for all hospital bills at the very least. I don’t agree that you should kill a dog for being a dog. Punish the owner!!!
Once dogs like these taste blood, they’ll attack again. Even the owner, the aunt’s life is at risk now. So yes, these dogs would have to be put down.
Exactly. What happen to the uncle? Why didn’t he drive her?
So the neighbours had to come from next door to get the dogs off?
Not even uncle could “tame” them? Smh.
A lot of dog ignorance here. No such thing as a bad dog, just bad owners. Certain breeds are for certain personality types and not everyone one is suited to command a certain breed. Dogs are BRED for purpose. Some people raising certain breeds is akin to buying your 18yr old daughter a backhoe as her first vehicle…. It’s not the suitable breed for that person cause they cannot dominate or control the dog, the dog does not see them as a pack leader or alpha and does whatever it pleases, but in Antigua we follow fashion and love things, so we see people with big dog or exotic breeds and we want big dog too. Meanwhile most of us can’t even control “Brownie” I hope the young lady recovers and that the dogs are found and either rehabilitated in a new home or if not euthanized which is unfortunate but not their fault but 100% the owners. That owner is not suited to have those animals. Now because of her the young lady is damaged psychologically amd physically and the animals most likely going to be put down. Damn shame, especially if it is true people have warned her several times about the aggression of these dogs.
Reading through the comments I see this old fear of pitbulls is still around maybe the commenters are older age or fear if pitbulls still is around to this day and I never realized.
No dogs will not attack the owner especially pitpulls which have a strong attachment to the people it grows up around the if it knows you it’s a playful puppy.
Pitbulls are territorial and like any other dog it’s not going to attack you randomly if it doesn’t claim an area which is why dogs rarely attacks someone in the street while it was roaming. But like any other breed it can be trained.
Like any dog breed it has it own perks and cons and depending on it upbringing it can be aggressive or timid and if you talk to dog trainers there are things you can do to make and breed aggressive especially pregnant dogs that lay puppies are way more agressive if it’s already especially if it’s already aggressive in fact there a dog I know which is free that will rush anyone that pass it’s home rush me many times and even bitten people. Its not a big thing because its a smaller breed so people aren’t fraid to bark back.
Myself had dogs and family/friends had or has dogs of many breeds but are train from pitbulls, rottweiler, akitas bull mastiff even mixed the dog personality depends on how it’s trained brought up and taken care of and any dog can attack a person ask APUA meter readers
I am a lover of dogs. The pitbulls didn’t do anything wrong. Because of all these arm robberies and breaking into people homes, the dogs were placed in the house for maximum security. They are her firearms. The owners of the house should put away the dogs whenever a none members of the house are present. How comes the dogs didn’t bite the uncle ? If the uncle is a part of the house, why he allow that lady to get beaten by them dogs. The bear fact the owner hide them dogs, he or she have no remorse for the injured lady. It is an offence in Antigua to keep ferocious dogs. Pit bulls are Banned dogs in Antigua and it is an offence to keep pitbulls. If you have them, nobody should know you have them. I believe that lady accustom to go there and now the dogs almost kill her. Once they reach that stage where they attacking human being , they cross the red line. Villagers are also complaining about the dogs behavior which certify that the dogs are indeed ferocious. Only solution for them is to put them to sleep. The owner should be taken into custody and compelled to make the dogs available to the police. Them dogs are the right tool to apprehend those who broke and enter your house. Same thing with human beings. If they stab or kill you, they will be arrested and given the necessary punishment. The Privy Council abolish the death penalty for human beings and not for Dogs. I cannot do without dogs but they must be under control. The owner is full responsible for negligence. The owner should pay for all her medical bills. And for the good doctor, STOP ADMINISTERING TRANADOL TO PATIENCE. TRANADOL IS A DEADLY PILL. ONLY IN ANTIGUA DOCTOR STILL ADMINIDTERING TRAMADOL. TRAMADOL IS ONE OF THE BEST PAIN KILLER ON THE MARKET. IT WORK VERY WELL AND FAST. IT NORMALLY SHUT DOWN YOUR HEART. ALL THE BIG CITIES ALREADY BANNED TRAMADOL WHY ANTIGUAN DOCTORS STILL ADMINISTERING TRAMADOL TO PATIENTS. TRAMADOL SHUT DOWN MY HEART TWICE UNTIL THE DOCTOR COULD FOUND OUT THAT WAS THE PROBLEM
These dogs are at the wrong place the wrong time, why couldn’t they be at one a the house breaking or during the gas station owner fatal attack?
The fact that “a family members” dogs were hidden after a vicious attack on another family member is very disappointing……if you can’t trust your family……then who can you trust? Obviously NO ONE!
Where did this attack occur? It seems like the writer was deliberately trying to hide that information. Did not mention the town, village or hospital .
This story makes little sense. Is it even true?
Everyone talking about pets pets pets, like this woman had four pitbulls in her yard as pets.
Y’all sound more like Americans than Antiguan’s. It’s unfortunate that it was her family that got attacked, but those dogs were not there as no pets, so just stop it.
In fact I will surmise that every household should get one of these dogs, because the way the criminals are running Antigua right now, a pitbull is a added measure of security.
Not blaming the dogs for anything here, and they should be put down, period. If I go out and get a pitbull, it’s not for no damn pet, let’s just be real. Yes their are a few people who can keep these dogs from being aggressive, but it’s hard hard work, so they are typically not pets.
Waiting to hear the twist to the story. The maths aint mathsing.
Meant to say that the dogs shouldn’t be put down, period.
The way how some people are justifying owning a pittbull, I might as well get me a lion or an alligator and raise it as a pet.
