WISH’s Response to the 2025 National Budget: Mental Health and Wellness as Pillars of Progress

WISH – the Wadadli Initiative for Self-care and Healing – welcomes the Government of Antigua and Barbuda’s 2025 National Budget, themed “Creating a Resilient, Harmonious, and Prosperous Nation.” This budget lays a robust foundation for advancing social equity, health, and economic stability, all of which intersect with our mission to prioritize mental health and wellness.

As a platform dedicated to breaking the silence and stigmas surrounding mental health, we are particularly encouraged by several initiatives outlined in the budget that align with our vision of holistic and integrative mental health care.

Investments in Mental Health

The government’s $8.1 million investment in a 6-acre facility in Seaview Farm to establish a state-of-the-art mental health center is a transformative step. This facility will provide holistic care to individuals in need, marking a pivotal moment for behavioral health services in our country.
“This initiative represents a shift in how we address mental health in Antigua and Barbuda,” said Chaneil Imhoff, Founder of WISH. “It’s a reflection of our collective progress toward a society that values mental health as essential to overall well-being. WISH is eager to collaborate with policymakers to ensure this facility sets new standards in care and accessibility.”

Addressing Youth Empowerment and Crime Prevention

The government’s “Four E’s” strategy—focused on Education, Entrepreneurship, Employment, and Personal Enhancement—targets youth at risk, aligning with WISH’s emphasis on proactive mental health interventions. Expanding training opportunities and engaging young people through meaningful programs not only reduces crime but also promotes emotional resilience and self-worth.

Healthcare Enhancements

The completion of the Renal Centre and expanded emergency facilities at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre illustrate a growing commitment to comprehensive healthcare. These advances contribute to the continuum of care, ensuring that physical and mental health needs are met in tandem.

Social Equity Initiatives

Increased pensions, utility subsidies, and food assistance programs reflect an inclusive approach to addressing socioeconomic vulnerabilities—key determinants of mental health. Empowering vulnerable groups fosters emotional well-being and stability, further advancing the nation’s harmony.

Housing and Community Support

The Booby Alley Housing Development Project and home improvement initiatives under the Sustainable Island Resource Framework (SIRF) Fund address critical housing needs. Stable, dignified housing directly contributes to mental wellness, providing individuals and families with a foundation to thrive.

The Broader Vision for Mental Wellness

Beyond the direct investments in mental health, the 2025 Budget’s focus on education, youth empowerment, and equity underscores a comprehensive approach to creating a resilient society. As WISH continues to champion the integration of mental health into national dialogues and policies, we see opportunities for collaboration with government initiatives to extend our impact.

WISH remains steadfast in its mission to revolutionize mental health care in Antigua and Barbuda. With this budget as a framework, we are optimistic about creating a society where mental health is normalized, prioritized, and fully supported.
