Pollster Peter Wickham says the possible exit of Algernon Serpent Watts from the St. George constituency could further unsettle the United Progressive Party at a delicate moment.
Watts, a first-term MP who won the seat convincingly in the 2023 by-election, has been weighing his political future and was not included on the slate of candidates announced by party leader Jamale Pringle for the next general election. Pringle has since said the party is seeking a replacement.
Watts has indicated he will not contest the next polls, constitutionally due by 2028, citing health reasons, though internal party tensions have persisted.
“If he does leave, it destabilizes the constituency,” Wickham said, noting that while Watts won comfortably, replacing a sitting candidate typically has a disruptive effect. He added that the UPP is “not exactly in a good position to start with,” and losing a charismatic incumbent could further weaken the party as it heads into an election cycle.

Serpent might be charismatic, but he dunce like fart. Serpent as an MP has not made a single contribution of note in parliament for 3 years. Even his budget debate contribution last month was a mere regurgitation of the same boring points (Agriculture budget allocation is just to pay staff blah blah blah) he speaks about on radio for last 10 years. Nothing innovative, nothing new.
Plus Serpent was the only MP who didn’t even speak of what he did in his constituency St. George’s for the last year.
As a UPP insider, Serpent made the UPP more toxic and dumber. The party only kept Serpent around to have unlimited access to Observer radio and control their newsroom narrative.
Good riddance to bad rubbish and poor representation. A better candidate will be placed there to represent St. George’s.
Giselle had lost plenty respect for Serpent & didnt want him around on UPP slate no more, and made stuff uncomfortable for him. big factss. Serpy focus on u health and leave them backward people party 2 crumble on its own
Batty boy have a say? Or that serpent cause h to get some monies from the treasury through Gaston
Why would anyone listen to anything miss Wickham have to say? She is a known mouthpiece for the ALP.
