Regional pollster Peter Wickham says the outcome of the St. Philip North by-election may present an opportunity for Prime Minister Gaston Browne to consider calling an early general election, pointing to what he described as a strong showing by the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) and a weakened opposition.
“Certainly, if I were in a position to press the electoral button, I would be attempting to do that,” Wickham said, adding that he is now “persuaded… that it’s something that the Prime Minister ought to consider.”
Wickham described Randy Baltimore’s victory as highly significant, noting that the ABLP secured one of its strongest performances in the constituency in decades. “Everything is impressive about this victory… he’s on 70%, 69%. It is among the highest levels of support that the ABLP has ever gotten in that constituency,” he said.
He pointed to what he called a major political shift, adding, “His personal swing is 16% in favor of the ABLP… this is essentially almost a reversal of what the ABLP experienced in the last general election.” According to Wickham, the result signals that “the ABLP is definitely back,” with Baltimore entering Parliament “on a fairly high note.”
Wickham also highlighted voter participation, saying turnout was “almost 70%… quite impressive, quite high, and consistent with the fact that Antiguans took this election pretty seriously.”
Turning to the opposition, Wickham said the United Progressive Party (UPP) is facing significant challenges. “Clearly the UPP is on the back foot. This is the weakest that they have been in a while,” he said, arguing that the current political environment may offer “few opportunities that will be as attractive as this for ABLP” as it eyes a potential fourth term.
He added that the scale of the defeat raises broader leadership questions within the UPP, suggesting that party leader Jamale Pringle may need to reflect on his position. “Tonight was as much about Jamale Pringle as it was about Randy Baltimore… and Randy Baltimore won, and he won well,” Wickham said.
Wickham also referenced the legacy of former MP Sir Robin Yearwood, noting that the constituency’s strong support for Baltimore is “a credit” to Yearwood’s long-standing influence, calling it “fairly impressive” that the transition was endorsed so decisively by voters.
He concluded that the by-election result has shifted the national political landscape, creating what he described as a “unique political opportunity” for the governing party moving forward.

UPP is now in the DUST BIN. UPP needs a name change and PERSONEL.
GASTON BROWNE calling an early general election would be political suicide, unless G.B address paying the CLICO/BAICO policyholders in ANTIGUA their money, also unpaid obligations to teachers, contractors, vendors, landlords, and LIAT(1974) LTD workers their severance. MOTTLEY paid over 30000 CLICO POLICYHOLDERS also the LIAT WORKERS in BARBADOS and WON the GENERAL ELECTIONS LANDSLIDE VICTORY by telling the people “GIMME THE VOTE AND WATCH MUH”.HOME DRUMS BEAT FIRST, I WILL PAY YOU your money if ELECTED.Promise made promise kept. NOTE :AMOST EVERY HOUSEHOLD IN ANTIGUA ARE VICTIMS OF THE CLICO/BAICO DEBACLE.
The UPP has been disappointing since the 2023 elections. Stuck with old leadership and elected Pringle who hasnt stuck to any of his promises (no young person in Senate, no UPP headquarters). Outside of Simon and Lewis, no one can name a seat that the UPP has truly represented well, much less expect to win in any future election.
That party honestly needs a Barbados style wipeout before they realise that voters need a serious alternative government in waiting, not feckless opposition activists.
Wickham not wrong you know… politics is timing and ABLP riding high right now. Strike while the iron hot
UPP really need to regroup because this result wasn’t even close. 924 to 406?? That telling a story
well after 50 l9ng hard years of NEGLECT and ABUSE, the people are still traumatized.
I’m wondering if he was this vocal in Barbados election
Whether they call it now or a year from now nothing will change with the UPP
Jamale Pringle have to answer some serious questions. Too many losses back to back
