Why Does My Rechargeable Vape Taste Burnt?

0

In the past, you could always count on a disposable vape to give you great flavor from the first puff until the device was completely dry. With today’s rechargeable vapes, though, that’s not always the case. You have firsthand experience with that issue if your rechargeable vape tastes burnt.

Why would a rechargeable vape taste burnt? Mostly, it comes down to the fact that today’s devices are much more powerful – and hold much more e-liquid – than the vapes of the past. For those reasons, it’s possible to encounter issues with a rechargeable vape that you wouldn’t have experienced with a smaller vape. In fact, a rechargeable vape actually behaves more like a refillable vape in that sense.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the things that you need to do if you have a rechargeable disposable vape that tastes burnt. If you’re using a vape that’s refillable, it’s a slightly different story because you can always fix the situation by installing a new pod or coil. A disposable vape doesn’t have that feature, though, and that makes troubleshooting a burnt flavor a bit more difficult. We’ll explain why it’s happening and what you can do.

You’re Using a Vape with a Sweetened E-Liquid

If you used your disposable vape for a few days before it began to taste burnt, there are two possible reasons for the issue. Either you’re using a vape that contains sweetened vape juice, or your device is out of e-liquid. If you’ve been vaping for a while, you probably already know how to tell when your vape is empty – and if you don’t, we’ll explain that in the next section.

If you’re an experienced vaper, though, you probably like sweet e-liquid flavors and are using a high-capacity vape for the first time. The reason why that’s an issue is because if an e-liquid has a sweet flavor, it’s sweetened with sucralose. Vapes don’t contain sugar, but sucralose is just as bad for a vape because it caramelizes like sugar when it’s heated. The melted sucralose sticks to the coil in your vape and creates a crust that causes the device to produce a smoky, burnt flavor. There’s no avoiding this problem when you use a sweetened e-liquid; you simply never noticed it before because non-rechargeable vapes don’t contain enough vape juice for the residue to cause a significant problem.

So, what can you do if sweetened e-liquid is the reason why your rechargeable vape tastes burnt? You have three options.

  • You can avoid the issue by using vapes with lower e-liquid capacities.
  • You can continue using high-capacity vapes but switch to a flavor that’s not sweetened. Flavors with names like “Clear” and “Pure” typically don’t include added sweeteners.
  • You can continue using sweet flavors and simply put up with the fact that they’ll start to taste a little burnt before they’re empty.

Your Vape Is Out of E-Liquid

Are you using a disposable vape for the first time, and did the device begin to produce a burnt flavor after you used it for a few days with no problems? If you’re a new vaper, one of the first things you’ll need to learn is how to identify when your vape is empty. If you get a badly burnt flavor every time you hit your vape, it’s time to replace your vape because it’s out of e-liquid.

One of the great features of many new vapes is that they often have built-in screens showing how much e-liquid they have left. If you have a vape with a screen, you should definitely pay attention to it because it’ll give you plenty of advance warning when your vape is about to be empty. The screen is driven by a software algorithm rather than a physical sensor, which means it’s just an approximation – but when the meter reaches the bottom, your vape will definitely start to taste burnt soon.

You’re Using Your Device’s Boost or Pulse Mode

Does your vape have a switch or button on the bottom that changes the device’s vapor production? If it does, you’re using a dual-coil vape that has the ability to switch between using one coil or both coils on demand. This feature usually has a name like Boost Mode, Turbo Mode or Pulse Mode, and it’s useful because it allows you to double your device’s vapor production whenever you want to.

The thing about having a dual-coil disposable vape, though, is that you might not actually need to double your device’s vapor production. Disposable vapes are usually very high in nicotine – so high, in fact, that they don’t need to produce large vapor clouds at all in order to replace the nicotine delivery of tobacco cigarettes. Chances are, in other words, that you’re already getting as much nicotine as you need even when your device is in the single-coil mode.

If using a rechargeable vape’s Boost or Pulse mode results in a higher level of nicotine delivery than you actually need, the device isn’t exactly going to produce a burnt flavor. The flavor will be much more intense due to the higher wattage and higher nicotine delivery, though, and it may cause a slight burning sensation in your mouth or throat if you aren’t used to it. In this case, the solution is easy: Just use the single-coil mode instead. That’s plenty for most people.

You’re Chain Vaping

The final reason why your rechargeable vape might taste burnt is because you’re chain vaping, which means that you’re hitting your vape constantly without ever pausing or putting it down.

Why can chain vaping make a vape taste burnt? It’s because of how vapes work. Your device has a wick on the inside that carries e-liquid from a reservoir to the heating coil. It works through simple absorption. When you hit your vape, the wick dries out, which causes it to absorb more vape juice from the reservoir. E-liquid is quite thick, though, so the absorption doesn’t happen instantly. You need to allow at least a few seconds after each puff for the wick to equalize itself, or you’ll experience a burnt flavor intermittently when you use your vape.
