Weston Warns of ‘Forces Gathered to Topple the Labour Party’
Former Minister Lennox Weston has warned that the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) is facing a broad and coordinated attempt to destabilise the government, involving international actors, wealthy foreign interests, and the domestic opposition.
Speaking at a political rally on Thursday night, Weston said the party was not simply contending with the United Progressive Party (UPP), but also with what he described as a wider geopolitical threat.
“We have found ourselves at a place where powerful forces have gathered—some with billions, others with influence in Washington—to bring this government down,” Weston told party supporters.
He alleged that a billionaire with ties to the Russian oligarchy, along with foreign governments and the UPP, were engaged in a calculated effort to discredit Prime Minister Gaston Browne and fracture the ABLP’s support.
“But Gaston Browne is not the problem,” he said. “The problem is the indomitable spirit of the working class of Antigua and Barbuda. You take one of us down, and 20 more will rise.”
Weston defended the ABLP’s record in office, crediting the party’s leadership with steering the country through multiple economic crises, including the collapse of major financial institutions and the COVID-19 pandemic. He argued that the Labour Party had consistently delivered creative and pragmatic solutions where others had predicted failure.
“This is not about one man—it’s about our sovereignty and the right of small states to govern themselves without foreign interference,” he said.
He further cautioned against what he called “the politics of deception,” criticising the opposition’s alleged reliance on external funding and unqualified leadership. “They are asking you to sell the soul of your country,” Weston said, referencing foreign donors and the elevation of opposition figures he claimed lacked the literacy and skills to govern effectively.
In a broader warning, Weston suggested that upcoming changes in global leadership—particularly in the United States—could pose additional challenges for small island states. He urged voters to stand firm, resist outside pressure, and defend the nation’s independence.
“The era ahead will test our resolve,” he said. “But the Labour Party has always been about defending the people’s interests—and with your support, we will continue to do so.”

The government must stop blaming the opposition for its current worries. The opposition themselves are dealing with their own party issues. What is happening in the ABLP is their own self inflected wounds. Blaming others for their own issues is the standard operating procedure among politicians. It is a tactic known as psychological projection and is a propaganda technique torn from a political playbook. Blame everyone else but don’t take responsibility for your actions. It aims to shield supporters from the impact of allegations made against politicians while drawing the focus away from the specific details. Just as UPP internal issues has nothing to do with the ABLP, the ABLP issues has nothing to do with the UPP. For God sake, stop the blame game and seek to address and resolve the ruinous and damaging issues.

I was rather surprised to see and hear Weston on a ABLP platform and defending the Prime Minister. Not only immediately after the general election in which he lost but he continued to bad mouth the Prime Minister on every opportunity he got. Lots of people including comrades can testify that whenever you meet him he had nothing good to say about the party and especially the Prime Minister. So what has changed ? Is it that you think that the PM is in trouble and you want to pretend that you came to his rescue or is it the party chairman making his move. Which ever way I hate judases. One thing for sure PM might have an open door policy to UPP-ITES but when it comes to APLP comrades that go around and bad mouth. It will take a whole lot of convincing.
