‘We Don’t Want Excuses—We Want Action’: Michael Joseph Slams Opposition Representation in Rural West

Caretaker for St John’s Rural West, Senator Michael Joseph, has sharply criticised the constituency’s long-standing opposition representation, accusing the incumbent of presiding over decades of inaction and missed opportunities.

Speaking at an Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) political rally on Thursday night, Joseph said many of the issues he witnessed as a child remain unresolved today, despite the MP’s 25 years in politics.

“The people of Rural West don’t need excuses,” Joseph told supporters. “They don’t need MPs who tell you they’ve been in politics for 25 years but only had a voice in the last two. That is not what this community needs.”

Joseph, who recently assumed the role of Minister of State, said he had already commissioned an engineering study to find a permanent solution to the long-standing flooding at Big Gutter. A follow-up assessment is expected in July.

“We’re not here to tell you we can’t act because we’re not in government,” he said. “We’re here to deliver, and we want you to hold us accountable.”

Joseph also underscored his commitment to addressing drainage problems across Rural West, outlining plans to upgrade infrastructure that has not kept pace with the area’s needs.

His remarks formed part of a broader pitch for the ABLP’s vision for the constituency, which he described as a blend of experience and youthful energy, aimed at delivering practical solutions.

“We don’t want people talking on behalf of young people,” he said. “We want people to talk with us.”

Joseph’s candidacy marks his formal entry into frontline politics after more than two decades of voluntary service with the Antigua and Barbuda Red Cross. He said a conversation during the aftermath of Hurricane Irma in 2018 helped shift his thinking on the importance of political representation.

“Some people can afford to be comfortable and avoid politics,” he recalled being told. “But many cannot. They need someone to speak for them.”

Joseph encouraged constituents to continue supporting the ABLP as it prepares for the next general election, stating: “This is not about politics for politics’ sake. This is about work, action, and solutions.”

  1. Another ALP retard. The ALP has been in power for over 10 years retard. All the problems that exist are the result of ALP incompetence, inaction, or indifference.

  2. You are a bigger fool than I thought.
Show me a parliamentary representative who does more in his constituency out of his pocket than Richard Lewis.
You have surfaced using state resources and claiming to be working.
    No. You are not.
Anything done with state resources is what should be done and what the people deserve.
Not even the prime minister who is also the minister of finance does as much as Richard Lewis does in his constituency.
So when you talk about representation take a look at what Richard Lewis has been doing.
If you really care about the constituency you would join hands with the representative and strengthen his advocacy.
Crows live with crows. Vultures live with vultures. Lions live with lions. Hyenas live with hyenas. Corrupt men socialize, fraternize, and conspire with their kind.
Show me your company and I will identify you

One thing for certain and two things are for sure, he has dedicated his life to serving the people long before politics and he will forever be a force, he has made a life for himself. 🙂

  6. Where was all this energy when y’all were selling the man’s boat, where?

Not a pin drop when Gatson Browne was making unscrupulous deals with crooks around the world, none, but now everyone is out the closet spitting this nonsense that the UPP got Antigua into this mess, really?

It’s not going to work this time Gatson..bigger dogs are hounding your arse, not little UPP, and as you call them ” a bunch of fools”.

Where was all this bluster when Gatson was making deals with the corrupt Nigerians with Antigua Airways, where were you guys when he made that foolish 70/30 deal with Air Peace corrupt CEO, and the biggest blunder of all, he went and stole and sold a $100mil Mega Yacht from a Russian billionaire.

So no, this will not work.

  7. @your poor mother, if you’re illiterate, I can’t help you. If you choose to come to this country, you should take the time to learn the system of government. Joseph is as ignorant as you.
