Prime Minister Gaston Browne has announced plans to appoint deputies at key statutory corporations across Antigua and Barbuda, as part of a broader effort to improve transparency, governance, and succession planning in public institutions.
Browne said several statutory organizations have been led by the same individuals for up to two decades, noting that while there is no suggestion of corruption, rotation is necessary for accountability and institutional renewal.
“We have people who are running them for 15 and 20 years,” the Prime Minister said. “I’m not accusing anyone of theft, but it’s part of good governance to rotate these heads and ensure we have proper succession.”
He referenced the government’s earlier passage of the Statutory Corporations Bill, which allows the administration to rotate and replace long-serving heads of public bodies. Browne said resistance to such reforms has even come from within his own party, recalling that he dismissed a senator who publicly opposed the measure during parliamentary debate.
The Prime Minister named Maria Martin, head of the Antigua and Barbuda Transport Board, and another senior manager at the Transport Board, among those who should be rotated.
As part of this initiative, Browne said the government recently advertised several deputy positions at major agencies, including the Antigua Port Authority, to ensure continuity in leadership.
“Telmacque must have a deputy,” he said. “We must be able to send Telmac on vacation and have someone competent to take over. That’s part of succession planning.”
Browne described the move as part of his administration’s commitment to institutional reform and long-term stability within public service operations.

Having a govt operative in a high position in a statutory corporation…doesn’t that defeat the purpose of a statutory corporation?
More jobs for the boys, increasing his voting pool, and further distraction to get the vehicle gate scandel off the front pages
Bingo
The vehicle sandals will soon be swept under the carpet. That is one can of worms 🐛 the PM Browne plans to keep sealed. He came out hot-headed to calm the people’s nerves about a thorough investigation; however, that blows off steam because his top executives got caught.
