Browne says ABLP building “future leadership” through deliberate succession planning
Prime Minister Gaston Browne says the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) is actively preparing its next generation of leaders, arguing that the governing party has put in place deliberate succession planning to avoid a future leadership crisis.
Speaking on the Browne and Browne Show on Pointe FM, Browne said the party has been grooming younger ministers and senators to assume greater responsibilities over time .
He contrasted that approach with what he described as uncertainty within the opposition, maintaining that the ABLP has focused on institutional continuity and long-term political stability .
The prime minister said leadership development within the party is intentional, not accidental, and forms part of a broader strategy to ensure governance remains steady beyond any one individual.
According to Browne, preparing emerging leaders for executive roles strengthens both the party and the country, particularly as younger members gain experience in Cabinet and the Senate.
The comments came during a wider discussion about party leadership, continuity and the political landscape ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
