Electoral Commission Achieves 10,000 Milestone Amid Declining Participation
The Antigua & Barbuda Electoral Commission has surpassed the significant milestone of processing over 10,000 replacement application counts for voter identification cards. According to the latest official report, the process, which began earlier this year, reached a total of 10,192 applications by the end of November 2024.
The report, detailing activity from August to November, highlights a steady decline in participation over the months. August recorded the highest monthly total of 4,209 applications, with figures dropping to 3,091 in September, 1,943 in October, and 949 in November.
The constituency of St. George consistently demonstrated high engagement throughout the period, contributing significantly to the overall total. In contrast, constituencies like Barbuda showed minimal participation, with just 268 applications processed over the entire four-month period.
Observers have noted the declining trend in monthly totals, which raises questions about public awareness or possible voter fatigue as the replacement process nears its conclusion. While August saw the highest surge, the dwindling figures in subsequent months suggest a need for renewed efforts to encourage final submissions.
As the Electoral Commission approaches the final stages of this process, stakeholders are emphasizing the importance of ensuring all eligible voters are equipped with the necessary identification cards ahead of the next electoral cycle.
