Shell Beach Road to Be Rerouted to Make Way for Coastal Development, PM Confirms

Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Gaston Browne has announced that Shell Beach Road will be removed and rerouted to the rear of a new beachfront development project currently underway.

The change is part of a broader government-backed initiative being managed by the National Asset Management Company (NAMCO), which is overseeing the transformation of the coastal area into a residential and tourism development.

During his radio appearance, Browne explained that while land clearing and subdivision are already in progress, an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) will be conducted once the final plans are completed.

“There will be an EIA, absolutely,” Browne said, addressing anticipated concerns over the environmental consequences of the project.

As part of the development, the existing Shell Beach Road, which currently runs along the seafront, will be decommissioned. A new road will be constructed behind the property to allow continued access to the area without running through the beachfront itself.

“Even though there’s only a road in front of it now, the road will go at the back of the property,” Browne stated. “There will be no vehicular traffic at the front.”

The Prime Minister reassured the public that despite the rerouting, beach access would not be restricted. The road realignment, he said, is intended to enhance the layout of the development while preserving public rights of way.

  1. Project done start not on paper but with actual work being done but there will be an EIA!!! You cant make these things up. Smooth!!!!

  2. I wish Gaston would leave a little of Antigua untouched. Anyone paying attention to what they are doing to Jolly Beach??? Soon the public will be left with a very small part of the beach for their family beach days, if that at all. Seeing the take over of our little island by foreign investors who just want to remove any locals from the beaches by blocking off access is just reprehensible.

  3. So… This has begun without an EIA?
    is this legal?
Govt seems to hold some other local investors to a higher bar than foreign investors, yet this enterprise appears to be
    treated extra specially.
All these differentials need to stop.
One set of requirements for all.

How will ABTA / Govt. mitigate the guaranteed reputational damage from anticipated awful reviews online when the annual sargassum STINK joins visitors on their vacation?
Jabberwock, Shell Beach are really intense in smell and damage to electronics, metals, cutlery etc. every summer.

  4. Gaston do wa you, do wa you, DO WAH YO WANT ! turn up the tune! Tek dat all ar you ANTIGUANS NO STAND UP FU NUTTIN so just do wah you want Gaston!

  5. This is an old Stanford Development Plan that has been washed off and changed a little. But I can tell you PM you need to consider this given that you want the Airport to get the FAA Category I status. I would suggest that Burma Road should be closed off entirely for public access. All the lands should be considered and made to be Airport Lands. And then we can expand the FBOs. Up to the RO Plant could be kept accessible for the public, but thereafter should be closed. And I see that work have begone in clearing the perimeter fencing. But remember bush grow back quickly in this country. Therefore constant maintenance is needed and we need to build a road inside of the perimeter fence where the Airport Security can easily patrol 24/7. And we need to have survailance cameras installed throughout the perimeter fence. Especialy monitoring the movement of the private jets. Any night traffic going in and out. We have a few operators there that seem to be doing as they like. Be careful. A pilot flying a private jet was caught with a few bags of drugs there already. We should not compromise on Security. Not even a mongose or a bird should get into the airport without we knowing. And we may create a paralell runway at the Burma Road Side when we close that road.
