Senator Shawn Nicholas Shocks Senate with Unexpected Resignation After 11 Years
Senator Shawn Nicholas, Minority Leader in the Senate, announced her resignation during what she declared her final sitting. The unexpected announcement, delivered with deep emotion, left her colleagues stunned and marked the end of an 11-year tenure in the Senate.
“I know there was a senator many years ago who called himself ‘senator for life,’ and I do not intend to be ascribed to such,” Nicholas said, explaining her decision to step aside. She reflected on her years of service since her initial appointment in 2013, describing the journey as personally enriching and expressing hope that her contributions had left a positive mark on Antigua and Barbuda.
The resignation caught the Senate by surprise, as it had not been previously hinted at. Nicholas used the opportunity to thank those who supported her along the way, including former Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer and current Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle, who reappointed her in 2018 and 2023. She also extended her gratitude to Senate colleagues, family, friends, and constituents, emphasizing the sacrifices involved in public service, particularly for women.
Reflecting on her legacy, Senator Nicholas highlighted her role in advancing gender-sensitive legislation, revising Senate standing orders, and advocating for the inclusion of young voices in leadership. “While it is important to retain talent, we must also give those we have trained the opportunity to serve,” she stated, adding that leadership renewal is critical for national progress.
Her resignation speech struck a balance between pride in her accomplishments and a readiness to embrace new chapters. Senator Nicholas reassured her colleagues that she remains committed to causes close to her heart, including the advancement of women, girls, and youth. “I may carry the title ‘former,’ but my service to Antigua and Barbuda is far from over,” she vowed.
Colleagues expressed shock and gratitude for her years of service, with many acknowledging her dedication to fostering meaningful debates and collaborative efforts in the Senate. Senator Nicholas ended her address with a call for unity, even across political divides. “We all want the best for Antigua and Barbuda. God bless this beautiful country,” she concluded.

Good luck to you Shawn Nicholas.I do not know you personally. However based on what I have heard over the years. You are very decent human being.Keep up the good things you are doing in Antigua.
Senator Nicholas has beeb a shining example of how we as women must carry ourselves as leaders and as politicians and patriots. Hopefully this is not farewell and or goodbye but a pause for this very dynamic and successful politician that is perfectly capable of serving our country in whatever capacity she chooses.
Great loss in a chamber where your work, your vision and your commitment, especially in favour of gender equality, children and the youth of this country were felt. Keep flying like an eagle and may God bless you and your new endeavors.
