PM Browne Promises Back Pay and Minimum Wage Increase for 2026

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has announced that public servants can expect back pay by December and another salary increase next year, along with a planned rise in the national minimum wage.

Speaking at a town hall meeting in the All Saints West constituency on Thursday night, Browne said his administration remains committed to empowering citizens as the economy continues to grow.

“I guarantee you that life is getting better for the majority of the people of Antigua and Barbuda, and we will continue to make sure that we empower the people of Antigua and Barbuda,” he said.

Browne said the government intends to process back pay for public servants before the end of the year and follow up with an additional pay increase in 2026.

“In fact, this year we will certainly make sure we do a back pay hopefully by December for public servants,” Browne said. “Next year you’re getting another increase again.”

He also pledged to raise the minimum wage next year, saying that workers must share in the benefits of national growth.

“Next year, [we will] increase the minimum wage because we can’t brag that the country [is] growing and developing and you don’t increase minimum wage,” Browne told residents.

The prime minister described the moves as part of his government’s broader commitment to fairness and economic empowerment for all citizens.

  1. Thia is twice the government will be giving backpay and those civil servants who retired from 2018 up till now never receive any backpay which they are entitled to also. They keep saying retirees files will be check and they will receive their backpay. Hope it materialize this time around.

  2. Come on..not this mistake..
Minimum Wage increase? That will increase the cost of operation of all Business around and by default increase of cost of all Gods and services..That will increase the inflation, and cost of living.
Why we don’t reduce Government Expenditures instead by:
    – Reduce Government Payroll by eliminating not necessary position in All ministries and departments
    – Reduce the Government Vehicles asset and other asset that is draining the BUdget.
    – Reduce Government building rental of properties around the island for any kind of office that most of time are way over of the space of what they need.
    – Reduce Government Taxes of import gods in shipping cost. This is killing us. We cant be paying Tax on Shipping so high and we depend toooo much of how shipping agencies are being affected for oils market prices. Is totally disrespectful having to pay 10% RRC, 17% ABST, 35% Duty for cost of the Freight+Marine Insurance. That shipping cost will increase due Big countries regulations and taxes in the Oil market. So mean you are charging us for the decision others countries made..Come on.
Government spending less will make our life better

  3. Hence the push for restitution from Car Gate. Explain to me, that it was said that some 30 of said vehicles was returned to one of the car dealerships Involved. And further that one of the car dealership have repaid $10,000 000.00 of the $15,000,000.00 of loss revenue for customs duties and taxes. If it is the said ar dealerships tha repaid the the money and the cars were returned to, should not the cars be 100% be property of the dealership. For said dealerships to sell or lease as they see fit. Should not said vehicles be held in a government secured area as part of an investigation, ( criminal or otherwise). I guess collecting the $15 000,000.00 is to be used to fund the outstanding back pay issue.
