PM Says Antigua and Barbuda Economy Nearing US$7 Billion
Antigua and Barbuda’s economy is approaching US$7 billion in value after expanding significantly over the past decade, Prime Minister Gaston Browne said Saturday, rejecting claims that his administration has underperformed.
Speaking on Pointe FM’s Browne and Browne programme, Browne said the economy has grown from about US$3.6 billion when his administration took office to roughly US$6 billion, with further growth projected within the next two to three years.
“Within the next two, two and a half years, Antigua and Barbuda’s economy will get up to about seven billion dollars,” Browne said. “We inherited an economy at about 3.6 billion.”
Browne dismissed criticism that little progress has been made, saying the figures demonstrate sustained expansion. “Figures don’t lie,” he said, adding that those who argue otherwise need only “drive around the country and you will see how hot the island is.”

He described tourism as strong, saying the sector remains “buoyant” and continues to drive employment and economic activity.
Browne said the country generated more than 4,000 jobs between 2024 and 2025, calling the increase significant for a nation with a population of about 100,000. “You have a small country generating 4,000 jobs, representing four percent of its population in one year,” he said.
The prime minister said economic growth has also been supported by immigration, as foreign workers help fill labour shortages created by expanding construction and tourism sectors.
“Practically anyone who wants a job and is not too fussy about what job they do can find a job,” Browne said, adding that many immigrants are arriving regularly to take up employment opportunities.

He said the government remains focused on sustaining growth while expanding local participation across key sectors of the economy.
