Prime Minister Gaston Browne outlined a vision for decorative lighting and pedestrian-friendly streets in the heart of St. John’s, saying improved urban design is key to creating a safer, more attractive and livable capital.

Speaking during a public consultation on the redevelopment of the city, Browne said enhanced lighting and walkable streets would improve the overall experience for residents, workers and visitors, while helping to revitalise the city’s core.

He described the measures as part of a broader effort to improve quality of life in St. John’s, noting that better lighting can enhance safety and aesthetics, while pedestrian-friendly spaces encourage greater use of the city beyond business hours.

The proposal was raised as officials discussed long-term plans to modernise the capital, shifting focus not only to infrastructure and enforcement but also to how people move through and experience urban spaces.

  1. Antigua is such a sad grimy vassal state cosplaying as developing nation

If St Johns ever look like this; I assume there will be a commensurate improvement in its infrastructure and maintenance.

In its current condition I have no interest whatsoever empty talk and false promises.

Present a plan and a schedule. Not just talk about it but calling it public engagement.

  2. @ Living and dying like dogs
In Antigua, we are dealing with the ultimate Charlatan, this man Gaston Browne will come up with all sorts of wonderful plans to hoodwinked the voters to give him another five years and after that it will be excuses on top of excuses. It’s for us to wise up and send him home to enjoy his wealth

  6. Look it’s 2026 we are 26 years into the 21st century…Modern times and time for the old 19th/early 20th century look of St. John’s to go….It’s about time…

  7. What Gaston Browne needs to say, is that he will be bringing heaven down to earth before the next election.
Nothing else will be done to St.John’s City by the Wicked Gaston Browne, he will leave Office without doing any kind of development program, to improve St.-Johns City.

  8. @ this world is a messed up place:
    I’d like to ask you.
Do you think that Antigua should get rid of, and modernize:
•The Nelson Dockyard, and replace it by the Port design in StJohns?
•The Anglican Church at Barnabus Hill in Liberta?

Your position is like slavery was a horrific and horrible experience.
Let’s not talk about it; let’s not learn about; let’s not hold those people accountable.

  9. Great idea but should also carefully consider the types of business that fill the city. Most “decent” people would not want to walk around in the evening in a town filled with casinos and strip clubs. Need to move those types of business somewhere else and encourage more wholesome nightlife in the city.
