Opposition Leader Pringle Rejects ‘Wicked’ Vehicle License Fee Hike at Protest
Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle joined protesters outside Prime Minister Gaston Browne’s office, standing in solidarity against the government’s proposed vehicle license fee increases. Addressing the crowd, Pringle made it clear that no increase—whether 40%, $100, or even $1—should be accepted by the people.
“We have to stand, we have to show the people,” Pringle stated. He criticized the Browne administration for seeking additional funds just three months after passing a national budget, in which he claims Cabinet ministers were not allowed to debate expenditures. “How can you come back now, without accounting for what has already been spent, and ask the people for more?” he questioned.
Pringle argued that the government’s approach is a deliberate strategy to justify the tax hike. “They put it at 40% first, knowing they need $100, just to make it seem like a compromise,” he said. He also pointed out that the government had already appropriated $95.9 million for road construction in the 2025 budget and questioned why additional funds were being demanded.
“Where did that $95.9 million go? That’s what people want to know,” Pringle said, calling for transparency from the Ministry of Works. “Not a cent, not a dollar—the people say no!” he declared.
The proposed increase, which has sparked public backlash, is expected to be discussed in Cabinet next Wednesday before being debated in Parliament.

PUPPET Pringle shut your DAMN mouth. Go back to school. You CANNOT inspire anyone. You CANNOT fix your PARTY. How the hell can you inspire anyone to picket. Time for PUPPET PRINGLE to resign.
Shut your damb mouth. You are a press statement leader of the opposition. You either want to lead from behind or you do not want to appear to be going against Gaston’s policies. It had to take people to pull you up the hill. No leadership from you. If the people didn’t plan this you would not have lifted a finger. Was your Puppet Mistress at the protest? If you love Antiguans and Antigua and you feel their pain and want to see things improve. It would serve you well to relinquish the post of party leader and office of opposition leader. You are an ALP masquerading as a UPP.
Videographer please get a proper microphone so we can hear what the people dem saying PLEASE. SMH
Waste of time
Why do they repeating that it’s a tax? It’s a licensing fee increase. If you don’t have a vehicle, you would not be affected. It works out to be between $12.00 – $22.00 additional per month. That’s one less hamburger to rotti per month. You will have better road infrastructure in the end.
I appreciate the passion, but what’s the opposition’s plan to fix the issue instead?
Pringle’s speech is strong, but we need solutions, not just criticism.
Nice to see a politician actually standing with the people. Let’s hope it’s not just for the cameras.
Calling it ‘wicked’ is bold, but honestly, this fee hike really does hurt the average person.
Finally, It’s refreshing to see leadership taking the people’s side for once!
I am so mad…. The cost of living is already high—this increase is just too much.
