Browne Accuses Opposition of Spreading Fake APUA Disconnection Notice

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has accused the opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) of spreading a fake utility disconnection notice online as part of what he described as a misinformation campaign during the St. Philip’s North by-election.

Speaking on his Browne and Browne radio programme on Pointe FM, Browne pointed to a document circulating on social media claiming that electricity, water and telecommunications services would be disconnected in several communities including Newfield, Glanvilles, Seaton, Willikies, Bethesda and Freetown.

The Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) later issued a statement confirming that the notice was fake and did not originate from the utility.

The authority said that while it had issued its routine monthly reminder for accounts more than 30 days overdue, the official communication did not identify or target any specific communities.

Browne said the circulation of the document reflected what he described as misinformation being used during the campaign, arguing that the claims could easily be disproved and warning that spreading false information risks damaging public trust.

In the video below, the Prime Minister discusses the fake notice during his weekly Browne and Browne broadcast and responds to the controversy.
