Antigua PM: New Dredge to Complete Harbour Turning Basin

Prime Minister Gaston Browne says the government will purchase a new dredging machine to complete works on the turning basin at St John’s Harbour, after the project stalled at a difficult rock section known locally as the “Jaws of Death.”

Browne told listeners on Point FM that around 93% of the dredging has already been finished, but the remaining section requires heavier equipment. He said Blue Ocean, now majority-owned by the state, will acquire a used dredge valued at just over US$1m to complete the job within weeks.

Executives are expected to travel to Europe shortly to inspect the machine, which will also be used for dredging at Crabs, maintenance deepening of St John’s Harbour to up to 40 feet, and beach replenishment projects such as Runaway Bay.

The Prime Minister added that with the investment, Blue Ocean would become one of the best-equipped dredging firms in the Caribbean, positioning Antigua and Barbuda to offer dredging services to other islands.
