Malaka Parker Says UPP Is Ready for Renewal After Past Divisions

Former senator and community activist Malaka Parker says the United Progressive Party (UPP) has reached a point of maturity that makes it ready for growth and renewal, despite a history of internal divisions that once drove her from frontline politics.

Speaking during a Twin Island Media Live interview on Saturday, Parker said her decision to rejoin the UPP followed extensive reflection and discussions with party leaders about lessons learned from past leadership contests and internal conflicts.

Parker, who left the party in 2016 following a bruising leadership race, said she was not prepared to return until she was satisfied that the party had addressed issues of inclusiveness, culture, and internal repair.

She said those conversations did take place and convinced her that both she and the party had evolved.

Parker acknowledged that the UPP has historically struggled with the fallout from leadership contests but argued that the party’s commitment to internal democracy, while sometimes messy, ultimately reflects a willingness to grow rather than suppress dissent.

She said her return should not be viewed as a claim that all problems have been solved, but as part of a broader effort to strengthen and expand the party ahead of the next general election.

Parker added that her own growth over the past two years away from active politics also played a role in her decision, describing her return as being grounded in principle rather than convenience.

She said the UPP now represents the most credible vehicle for rebuilding the opposition and advancing policy-focused governance, while acknowledging that continued work is needed to unify supporters and re-energize the party at the grassroots level.

  1. Is Malaka Parker dreaming or something. What a bunch of hogwash. Is she now saying the UPP is united as ever.

  2. Good to listen to all the positivity coming from the return of the Most Honourable Malaka Parker.

Once the UPP refocuses on what’s troubling the hardworking citizens of this country, then returning to power should be a stroll in the park come next General Election

This should be UPP’S winning formula:

    1) Tackling the high costs of living

    2) Giving the same business concessions to born and bred Antiguans as outsiders

    3) Reducing the power of lobbyists, who seem to have more power than the electorate

    4) Ensure that salaries, overtime and pensions are paid on time

    5) Open up the financial books of the ABLP to find out why the lack of transparency

    6) Close the amnesty loophole on allowing immigrants to vote near General Elections

    7) put an end to the continuous price gouging by greedy retailers

    8) Ensure that Freedom of Information Requests are adhered to

    9) Put in place an Attorney General that can bring our judiciary into the 21st century and beyond

    10) Give our Police Commissioner the tools and financial backing to fight rising crimes

    11) Employ a Chief of Immigration Officer fit for purpose to protect our borders

    12) Deport those who have abused overstayed their welcome

    13) Get more Antiguans reading (especially on Black history) to create more critical thinkers; even if it means opening libraries in every Parish

If the leadership team in the UPP ignore the distracting noises from the ABLP and focus on their numerous broken manifesto promises, then the future looks bright for one and all.

Again, great to have you back on board Ms Parker 👍🏾

  3. … And as usual, her critics cannot string two sentences together. ABLP really know their untutored voters!

  4. @ FC and Wadadli Woman

Both of you ought to know, because you are in her head, useful idiots.
You both will also cast all the votes for the the farcical ABLP, that NOBODY wants.

You think you can change people mind from voting for Malaka and UPP and to Hypocritical Dwayne George and Anthony ‘Judas’ Smith etal

  5. @ I Voted

And who do you think cares.

We will all suffer the high cost of living, not just UPP supporters, ABLP voters won’t be exempt. Do you know how many ABLP supporters I have to help financially-NO MO.
High electricity and water charges, the poor roads infrastucture, the VEHICLE GATE which will result in you paying more taxes, just like UPP voters, infrequent and poor customer service from government departments.
IT IS OBVIOUS THAT IT’S EITHER GASTON OR ONE OF HIS USEFUL IDIOTS WROTE THIS, because how can one ”changed from UPP” when UPP NAR INNA POWER. U NEED MENTAL HELP, YOU AND THOSE U FOLLOW, LOL
