The government will begin renovating its own buildings in St. John’s as part of efforts to improve the capital’s appearance and functionality, Works Minister Maria Browne said, stressing that the state must lead by example as it calls on private owners to do the same.
Speaking during a public consultation on the redevelopment of St. John’s, Browne said several government-owned properties in the city are in need of repair and will be upgraded as part of the wider renewal push.
She said the initiative is intended to demonstrate the government’s commitment to improving the capital, noting that public buildings must reflect the same standards being encouraged across the private sector.
The minister’s comments came amid broader discussions on urban decay, infrastructure upgrades and shared responsibility between government and property owners in revitalising St. John’s.
