Antiguan Chevening Scholar Named Flag Bearer for Commonwealth Day 2026
Dr. David Francis has been selected as the flag bearer for Commonwealth Day 2026, an honour he described as especially meaningful as Antigua and Barbuda prepares to host the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting later this year.
Francis, Antigua and Barbuda’s 2025–2026 Chevening Scholar, is currently studying applied infectious disease epidemiology. He said the role highlights the spirit of cooperation among Commonwealth nations.
“Being a part of the Commonwealth for me means a kinship with 55 other countries,” Francis said. “It’s about collaborating with one another, supporting each other, investing in each other.”
He noted that serving as flag bearer carries added significance with the upcoming Commonwealth meeting set to take place in Antigua and Barbuda.
Francis also pointed to the Commonwealth’s youthful population as a key driver of future progress, noting that more than 60 percent of the organisation’s citizens are under the age of 30.
“It’s really not cliché to say that the youth are the future,” he said. “These young minds are the same minds that are going to help shape and mold the future of the Commonwealth.”
Speaking from the perspective of a medical professional, Francis also highlighted the importance of health within the Commonwealth’s broader prosperity agenda.
“Prosperity is part of the theme this year, but as a doctor, I can’t stress enough that health is wealth,” he said, adding that he hopes to see stronger collaboration on public health initiatives across member states.
Francis closed his remarks by extending greetings to all Commonwealth countries.
“To the 56 member countries, I’m wishing you a happy, healthy, and prosperous celebration. Happy Commonwealth Day.”
