Public Safety and National Security Minister, Sir Steadroy Benjamin, has condemned the rise in gun-related crimes, warning of their destructive impact on communities across the region.

Speaking at the latest meeting of the CARICOM Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS), held in Antigua, Sir Steadroy described the violence as “senseless” and said such acts have no place in society.

His remarks came in the wake of the weekend killing of businessman George “Charlie” Barnes, whose death has reignited public debate over gun violence and safety.

The minister told regional security officials that gun crimes tear at the fabric of society and undermine public confidence, stressing the urgent need for coordinated regional responses.

The IMPACS meeting in Antigua is focusing on shared strategies to combat organised crime, improve intelligence-sharing, and strengthen border security across CARICOM states.

  1. With respect Attorney General Benjamin, what we Antiguans want to hear from those who are supposed to govern over us, is what are your proposals in regards to stemming the growing tidal waves of crimes that’s threatening to engulfing us?

Prime Minister Browne in recent times has talked about everything but addressing the country about how his government is going tackle crime head-on.

Here’s a list of his headlines that he seems more concerned with:

1- “PM Browne defends Dominic Republic …”

2- “PM Browne condemns opposition for discouraging attendance of National Day of Prayer …”

3- “PM Browne projects Antigua and Barbuda to rank among top Caribbean nations :..”

4- “PM Browne unveils plans for mass tree planting …”

5- “PM urges subsidies for African – Caribbean flights …”

6-“PM rubbishes Sir George Ryan’s criticism of Jolly Beach investment …”

7- “Browne says government to purchase more concrete trucks …”

Prime Minister Gaston Browne hasn’t addressed what is concerning the nation at present.

As we Antiguans can witness Attorney General, this government has got its priorities all skewed up in the current climate of growing criminal activities.

TELL BROWNE TO REASSURE US AND TAKE ACTION!

  2. The government should get solar powered streetlight with camera combination out of china to replace all existing streetlights system and help the police and government solve crime.

  3. Blah, blah, blah. Actions speak louder than words Mr. Public Safety and National Security Minister… For a start, make the Defense Force a visible presence on the streets and surveil other areas covertly with additional boots on the ground.

The government/police need to get their act together fast before the much higher numbers of gun-related crime and murders that are happening in St. Kitts, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, the TCI, etc. arrive in Antigua’s communities.
