Antigua and Barbuda Coast Guard Receives New Gunboat to Strengthen Maritime Security

Antigua and Barbuda’s Coast Guard has received a new gunboat, a key step in bolstering the country’s maritime security, Prime Minister Gaston Browne confirmed this week.

The delivery of the vessel is expected to enhance the Coast Guard’s ability to patrol national waters and respond more swiftly to security threats. Equipped for high-risk operations, the gunboat is designed to improve surveillance, support search and rescue missions, and tackle issues such as illegal fishing and drug trafficking.

Prime Minister Browne stressed the importance of the new asset, noting that it will play a vital role in safeguarding local fishermen, securing commercial shipping lanes, and protecting the growing marine tourism industry.

The delivery of the gunboat reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to modernising its security forces and enhancing its capacity to manage maritime challenges.

  1. Meanwhile a UPP MP busy buying boat for himself!!!! Those campaign donors need to boycott UPP’s corrupt candidate

  2. This looks like a 33 or 38 foot Renegade patrol boat which is a near perfect vessel for coast guard duties in the waters around Antigua & Barbuda. It probably has three Mercury 400R or 450R engines which will make it the fastest boat that coast guard has.

  3. There is concern that the introduction of a heavily armed gunboat might increase tensions in the region or be misused in ways that could undermine the peaceful image the nation aims to project.

  4. The gunboat is an excellent example of how Antigua and Barbuda is working with international partners to enhance its maritime security. It strengthens the country’s position as a reliable partner in regional efforts against illegal activities.

  5. This looks like a token jester of appeasement, that might work for shoreline patrol and, lifeguard duty. This vessel is not robust enough for the intended missions deemed necessary for offshore deployment that is suitable to sustain coastal security that might involve a sustained patrol; of forty-eight hours deployment, and, does not offer sustained comfort for the crew in such an event. But four or, five of these boats might help within the twelve mile limit extension of our national coastal waters; if augmented with on shore sentinels radars strategically located on designated elevations; to give warning coverage of a maritime security umbrella, and enhance the intended security, envisage as necessary for coverage of Antigua 🇦🇬 Barbuda. Nonetheless: It is a start in the cognizance of our national maritime security deterrence.

  6. The Gunboat was acquired for Gaston’s henchmen to go against Barbudans.

The delivery of the gunboat reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to modernizing its security forces and enhancing its capacity to manage challenges it has with Barbuda.

First the Riot Squad, then a contingent of an additional 16 policemen and women.

    Now the Gunboat Brigade.
