Williams-Grant, Shoul Returned as Senate President and Vice President

Alincia Williams-Grant and Philip Shoul were unanimously re-elected Wednesday to lead Antigua and Barbuda’s Senate at the start of the new parliamentary term.

Williams-Grant, who was returned for a fourth term as Senate President, thanked senators for their confidence in her leadership and described the opportunity as “humbling.”

“I consider it a humbling opportunity and a privilege to be seated here again,” she said following her election.

She also thanked Prime Minister Gaston Browne and Cabinet for nominating her to serve once more in the Upper House.

Williams-Grant welcomed the mix of returning and first-time senators and congratulated several young appointees entering Parliament for the first time, including youth parliament alumni Shaquan O’Neal and Jonathan Wenner.

The Senate President additionally congratulated women who contested the April 30 general election and encouraged greater female participation in politics.

Shoul, who was also returned unopposed as Vice President of the Senate, thanked the Prime Minister for the confidence placed in him and welcomed both government and opposition senators to the chamber.

“It is indeed a pleasure to be re-elected as Vice President of the Senate,” Shoul said during brief remarks following his election.

The Senate convened Wednesday for the swearing-in of senators appointed following the April 30 general election.
