ABCAS renames campuses to honour pioneers of education

The Antigua and Barbuda College of Advanced Studies (ABCAS) has officially renamed its campuses in tribute to three figures credited with shaping the nation’s higher education system.

The announcement came during the college’s launch ceremony on 16 September, which also featured the unveiling of a commemorative plaque marking the start of the new institutionAntigua & Barbuda Labour Party.

Dr Alister Francis Campus

The former Antigua State College (ASC) has been renamed the Dr Alister Francis Campus. Founded in 1977, ASC was seen as a beacon of opportunity, providing accessible and affordable tertiary education for generations of Antiguans and Barbudans.

Dr Francis, its founding principal, was remembered for his visionary leadership and commitment to ensuring that anyone with the desire to learn had the chance to do so. His work expanded the college’s programmes and helped to shape much of the nation’s modern workforce.

Eustace Hill Campus

The Antigua and Barbuda International Institute of Technology (ABIT), established in 2001, is now the Eustace Hill Campus. ABIT was created to equip students with in-demand skills in business and technology, preparing graduates for a rapidly digitalising world.

For more than a decade, Eustace Hill was described as the “face” of the institution. Known for his passion for knowledge and belief in education as the key to unlocking potential, he was central to developing programmes that gave learners practical skills and global relevance.

Muriel O’Marde Campus

The Antigua and Barbuda Hospitality Training Institute (ABHTI) has been renamed the Muriel O’Marde Campus. ABHTI played a pivotal role in elevating the country’s reputation as a premier tourism destination, training generations of chefs, hoteliers and service professionals.

Under Muriel O’Marde’s leadership, the institute expanded its scope and strengthened its role in professionalising the hospitality sector. Her dedication and example earned deep respect from colleagues and students, leaving a legacy of service and excellence.

Preserving legacy, shaping the future

College leaders described the renamings as a symbolic act that preserves the heritage of the country’s tertiary institutions while signalling a unified future under ABCAS. Prime Minister Gaston Browne hailed the new college as a cornerstone of inclusive education and national development.
