Victor Emmanuel McKay Sr., GCM, Laid to Rest in Official Funeral
Victor Emmanuel McKay Sr., GCM, was laid to rest today at the St. John’s Public Cemetery in a solemn ceremony attended by dignitaries, family members, and the public.
The official funeral saw government ministers, police officers, and pallbearers escort the flag-draped casket to its final resting place. The national flag of Antigua and Barbuda was meticulously folded and presented to McKay’s son in recognition of his father’s service and contributions to the nation.
Despite a slight drizzle, mourners remained steadfast as the Police Band played the hymn I’ll Fly Away. Under the funeral tent stood Governor General Sir Rodney Williams, Prime Minister Gaston Browne, Chief of Police Atlee Rodney, and Defence Force representatives, along with Members of Parliament, including Opposition MP Sherfield Bowen, who represented the Leader of the Opposition.
As part of the official committal service, scripture readings and prayers were offered in reverence to McKay’s life and legacy. The officiant declared, “In sure and certain hope of resurrection to eternal life through our Lord Jesus Christ, we commend to Almighty God our brother Victor Emmanuel and commit his body to the ground, earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust.”
The laying of wreaths followed, beginning with representatives from McKay’s family, followed by the Governor General, the Prime Minister, and other government and institutional representatives. Former Prime Minister Dr. Baldwin Spencer also paid tribute by laying a wreath in honor of the late statesman.
In the final moments of the service, blessings were bestowed upon McKay’s soul, concluding with the words: “May his soul rest in eternal peace.” As dignitaries and attendees exited the cemetery, tributes continued to pour in, commemorating McKay’s impact on the nation and his unwavering dedication to service.
The official funeral was broadcast live, allowing those unable to attend in person to witness the farewell of a distinguished national figure. The ceremony was a testament to the respect and admiration held for Victor Emmanuel McKay Sr., whose legacy will be remembered for years to come.
