SOURCE- DOMINICA NEWS ONLINE: The Official Funeral of well-known Dominican personality, Leonard ‘Pappy’ Baptiste who was famous for various instances of amusing behavior through the years will take place on Friday, December 13, 2024.
An official day of mourning has been declared on that day and the Dominica Flag should be flown at half-mast on all public buildings in the State.
The Official Funeral will be held at the Goodwill Pentecostal Church from 10:00 AM. Viewing of the body is set for 9:30 AM.
Born on December 23, 1938, in Castle Bruce, Mr. Baptiste received his early education at the Castle Bruce Primary School.
Lennard Baptiste’s political journey began with his service as a Senator in the Parliament, when he was appointed senator by then-Prime Minister Oliver James Seraphin, from January 14, 1980, to April 27, 1980.
He played a pivotal role in the founding of the Dominica Progressive Party, where he emerged as a vocal advocate for various progressive issues, including the construction of an international airport and the legalization of medicinal marijuana.
His vision laid a foundation for discussions on development and social change in Dominica.
He embarked on his professional journey at Melville Hall Estate, where he oversaw livestock before venturing abroad for greater opportunities.
His path took him to Antigua and later to St. Croix, where he established a successful taxi company and provided transportation services for employees working with Hess Oil Company.
Baptiste helped farmers earn a living when he rented a cargo plane to transport their produce to the Virgin Islands. He continued this service with a boat, which he bought with his own money, after Hurricane David in 1979.
In his early years, Pappy lived in St Croix where he started a small taxi company and where he was employed by the Hess Oil Company. However, he eventually returned to Dominica. By the early 80’s Pappy’s fortunes began to fade and soon the once wealthy businessman lost everything.
In the latter part of his life, Pappy was a frequent sight at the Roseau Market where many people still admired him.
