The University of the West Indies (UWI) is calling on Caribbean Community (CARICOM) governments to honour their outstanding debts to the region’s premier tertiary institution.
Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley, speaking to reporters on Wednesday night on his return from attending the 29thCARICOM Inter-Sessional summit in Haiti, said that the leaders had met with UWI officials, including the Vice-Chancellor Sir Hilary Beckles, in Port au Prince to discuss the issue.
“They came to make a presentation to the heads indicating that the university has very serious financial challenges to meet which require urgent attention and they implored the countries that are in arrears or those that have accumulated arrears that the university accounts require that those arrears be dealt with in some substantial way so as to not have their accounts presented in a manner that damages its ability to run its operations on sound financial practice, to put it mildly,” Rowley said.
He said the leaders agreed given the case made out by the UWI “states will pay attention to the university’s plight.
“I expect that the university will visit Trinidad and Tobago in the next two weeks or so to have bilateral discussions because the discussions with respect to the various countries, who owes what and who could do what with respect with respect to the debt will be handled on a bilateral basis,” Rowley said.
“So each country will talk with the university to see what can be done t bring about, pretty much a bailout from the situation they are in at the moment,” he added.
Rowley did not discuss the amount owed to the UWI that has its main campuses in Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago.

It’s sad that education has a price
What is the latest with the campus for Antigua.
Wait long for that. Money in Antigua is to pay for big red bus and to pay foreign artist hundreds of thousands of dollars and ham and turkey. Why waste money on education when you need to drive a Porsche on dem unsaved potholed roads. People are so unreasonable.Christ!!!
Last time I read he was talking about all members of Caricom…. And it is not the first time this has been mentioned some time in 2012 students from Antigua were barred from going class in the Jamaica campus go do your research before posting
Last time I read Antigua was in Caricom and were always delinquent in its payments to UWI, so what exactly is your point again?
Simple the point is the problems has always been there so stop acting like a political jackass and blaming the current government cause I experience it in 2012 when I could not go the class cause the governament did not pay in the monies.
You can’t read or wha, me say Antigua inna Caricom and we were ALWAYS delinquent, wha part of Caricom and ALWAYS you nah understand dat mean ALP UPP and the real estate agency we have running the country now. I see you missed the reading class but no blame me blame Gasty
From.your last comment shows your level of thinking. I’m just going to leave this argument.
@Ohhhh- Glad you decided to leave the argument. No one can ever get through to a Goat and that’s the mentality that “Lastone”appears to have..The brain of a Goat..
That Lastsonte need to know not all young people goes out and begs polticans. This is just the gutter mind thinking of the UPP supporters that why me nah vote for them again. They talking about ABLP putting on concert like they forgot all them show with all the high paid artist they does have. But then again plenty of them suffering from memory lost.
The thing is that no one take responsibility for anything in this twin island.we level of reasoning is like a child.make no sense
Antigua and other caricom countries have been delinquent in paying UWI way back before 2012 so please do your reach. It started way before the UPP ever won the government.
The CIP program have generated a lot of money (Over a billion dollar) so some of it should have gone towards paying UWI. Yes, the government should not have wasted the money on free concert, environmental reach car, etc… And pay UWI. Our children are our future.
I find these comments on this article to be so politically bias. Both the ABLP and the UPP government failed to pay UWI and at the end of the day the students pay to cost chupz. Y’all sound worst than the politicians and them.
