The Lifelong Learning Unit at The University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus has trained more than 1,400 people since its launch, with enrollment and certification numbers continuing to climb amid growing demand for workforce skills.
The programme, which began in 2021, has expanded steadily, moving from just over 100 graduates in its early years to a projected 600 or more participants set to receive certification this year.
Executive Director Paul C. M. Edwards-Lee said the unit’s growth reflects increasing interest in professional development as individuals seek to remain competitive in the job market.
Data from recent years show a consistent upward trend. In 2022, 132 people received certificates of proficiency. That number rose to 252 in 2023 and 346 in 2024, with projections indicating a significant jump in 2026.
Organisers say the expansion aligns with the campus’ broader mission to provide accessible education and practical training across the region, offering short courses and certification programmes designed to support career advancement.
Officials expect demand to continue rising and say the unit will further expand its offerings to meet the needs of learners seeking new skills and qualifications.
