Op-Ed: The UWI: A Research University Committed to the Caribbean’s Future
On September 13th, 2024, The University of the West Indies (UWI) Five Islands Campus held its annual Matriculation Ceremony, a formal welcome to new students.
This event was a significant milestone, as the campus, which started with 176 students in 2019, now boasts an impressive enrolment of 1,100 students.
The Five Islands Campus continues to grow and evolve, offering new programmes that meet the needs of the Eastern Caribbean in fields like Criminology, Health Care Management, Psychology, Pharmacy, Generative Pharmacy, Public Health, Sport Kinetics, and Sport Science.
One of the great hallmarks of this new academic year is the welcoming of our first-ever cohort of MPhil/PhD students—19 research candidates embarking on advanced academic journeys.
This marks a turning point for the Five Islands Campus as we build a thriving research culture in Antigua and Barbuda and the wider Caribbean. Through this commitment to research, UWI aims to drive meaningful development and progress in the region.
Why Research Matters: UWI as a Global Player
Many question the relevance and value of a university education in today’s world. UWI’s research mission has never been more relevant as the Caribbean faces unprecedented challenges. Our societies are at a critical juncture, confronting the Triple C Crisis—Crime, Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases, and Climate Change—and the rapid advancements of the 5th Industrial Revolution.
Solutions to these complex, multifaceted problems will not come easily, and they will not come from established answers. Instead, they will emerge from new ideas, creative thinking, and innovative research. UWI is deeply committed to fostering a culture of curiosity, critical thinking, and exploration. By equipping our students with the tools to research, question, and innovate, we help position the Caribbean to tackle its most pressing issues head-on.
From the rise of Artificial Intelligence to addressing economic inequality and the future of climate resilience, UWI’s researchers are on the frontlines. Our goal is to ensure that Caribbean societies survive and thrive in the face of these challenges.
