UTC President Says Airport Taxi Rules Won’t Affect Family Pickups

Ian Joseph, president of the United Taxi Company (UTC), moved Thursday to calm public concern over proposals to regulate ground transportation at V.C. Bird International Airport, saying the measures would not restrict relatives from picking up friends and family.

Joseph says that confusion over the plan had created “a misunderstanding” in the community. “I want the public to know that there will never be restrictions on families picking up loved ones,” he said. “What we are targeting are individuals who are not authorized to operate taxi services but come to the airport to collect passengers for money.”

The clarification followed a meeting earlier this week between UTC, other transport groups, and the attorney general to tackle the long-standing problem of illegal “fly-by-night” taxi operators. Proposals discussed included a vehicle sticker system, premiums and royalties to UTC from non-members, and tighter monitoring at the airport.

Some of the ideas drew criticism from residents who called them excessive, but Joseph said the intent is to improve fairness, security, and order for both drivers and travelers.

  1. Nonese, if the government ever implement half of those rules, say goodbye to tourism in Antigua.
Trying to stifle independent taxi drivers, is an act of witxhcraft. Associations scam and refuse new members every year and still wanna stifle their operations.
Why should non members pay dues to the association? Is the airport theirs? Talk about Fly by night, every taxi driver was once a fly by night looking to get established. This crab in a barrel mentality is killing us.
Now you want ABAA to approve a letter within 24 hours before an operation, so what if a booking comes in this morning for 1pm flight, the passenger is left stranded? Sounds like a perfect idea if you ask me.
Y’all been eating the pie for so many years, let others taste the pie too. All I see in this whole thing is BAD MINDEDNESS!!!

  2. I have a taxi driver that takes and picks me up for flights. As a regular visitor I feel safe with him. You’re saying because he isn’t a member of the airport taxi service he isn’t allowed to pick me up on my return? Really????

  3. Are we trying to build an economic power house or still living in the past!
