With a renaissance feel Dean Fenton’s poetry is more than artistic prose but tells a story of his passion for a life well-lived and define a fearless conviction that has helped to overcome the encounters and challenges that truly mark his character.
A respectable gathering of family, friends and colleagues surrounded Fenton on Monday night at the intimate setting of NiLu Gift Shop in the heart of Harlem for his first poetry reading and book signing as he opened up about his love and inspiration for the art of poetry.
Dean reflected on his childhood zeal for scribbling verses on paper with owner of NiLu Katrina Parris in an interview that revealed much about the writer and the man.
Balancing life with the full calendar of promotion and marketing of Antigua and Barbuda as a tourist destination, Fenton has been able to carve out the time to amazingly self-publish four books, Waltzing in the Breeze (2020), My Time at the Door (2021), A Theory of Thoughts (2022), and Baffling Affections (2023), all filled from cover to cover with his work.
At the Antigua and Barbuda Progressive Society House, two blocks away from NiLu, a chosen circle of Dean’s friends and colleagues added their voices to selected pieces of his work, accompanied by the soulful acoustic jazz of accomplished musicians Patrick Johnny Gomes, Konrad Adderley, Charles Merchant and Carl Edwards.
“I felt this was an appropriate time and place to celebrate with family and friends those things that keep me going. It came as we observed Black History Month. We owe it to all who came before to inspire those among us and generations to come. That’s what was important for me,” Fenton shared. Dean looks forward to the opportunity to share his work at home in Antigua and Barbuda before year end.
