The United States Embassy in Barbados has warned Caribbean nationals, including those from Antigua and Barbuda, against misusing tourist visas to give birth in the US to secure citizenship for their children.

In a recent advisory, the embassy said applying for a B-1/B-2 visa with the primary intention of giving birth constitutes visa fraud and will lead to denial of entry.

The warning aligns with a 2020 federal policy aimed at curbing so-called birth tourism.

Under the Fourteenth Amendment, children born on US soil automatically acquire citizenship. This has made the US a destination for thousands of expectant foreign mothers each year.

The embassy said consular officials have been instructed to refuse visas if there is reasonable belief that the main purpose of travel is to deliver a child in the US.

US immigration authorities estimate that about 33,000 babies are born annually to mothers on tourist visas, with the actual number likely higher when undocumented and other temporary entrants are included.

The trend has raised national security and immigration concerns among US lawmakers.

  1. The US Government has warned CARIBBEAN nationals over the abuse of birth tourism. Quite understandable, as they been doing for decades now.
ANR; isn’t Antigua and Barbuda part of the. Caribbean. So why do YOU think it necessary for your misleading headlines US warns Antigua and Barbuda nationals……
Alas, if only we had a choice in news providers!!!!

    • correct! It is like a bait and switch. The article says “CARIBBEAN NATIONALS” but I guess anything to get a “juicy headline”

  2. Antiguans are the ones that love to say , Foreigners populating their country , yet nobody like them love to give birth in another man’s country. SMH!

  3. i believe antigua should start impose some laws for foreigners cause they can come in antigua and do as them like

  4. Are some women so dissapointed in Antigua that they are willing to have their children born in other places? Do we not want to be associated with Antigua or to be called Antiguans, our are we looking for better for our children? Poor hospiral condition!………shame shame shame!! Do better Antigua so more women can feel comfortable giving birth here.

  5. Many mothers seeking better opportunities for their children may not see this as abuse, but as desperation driven by socio-economic conditions at home.

  6. While the Fourteenth Amendment guarantees birthright citizenship, the abuse of tourist visas to achieve this undermines the spirit of U.S. immigration law.

  7. Start giving every woman who applies for a US visa a pregnancy test then for all I care.

National security issue my ass. Everything is national security. Your dumb dumb orange baboon for a president is your most pressing national security issue!!!! He will soon sign an order that an non american showing up at a doctor or hospital to give birth must be reported.

  8. Ain’t nothing new here!
I guess the US government is now trying to Crack down on this scheme.hmm
I feel like partly because giving birth in antigua is sometimes a little risky!
Government fix the problems in the hospital
So people won’t have to travel overseas to have they baby..🤔

  9. ANR saw Dominica News single out Dominica so they copy and paste the same story and change countries. Come on ANR be original or different.

  10. Faithful National #1 is just the absolute worst, many times on ABS someone will come to the Caribbean to engage a number of States including Antigua/Barbuda and ABS will make is sounds as if it’s about Antigua alone when they read the headline later in the full story you realize it’s Antigua along with other states. I really believe when Gaston goes to the toilet he doesn’t need toilet paper he just has to walk with you

  11. Antiguan women have been doing this since the 60s. It used to be St. Thomas and St. Croix, then Puerto Rico and now NY, Miami and other places where their family lives in the US. The hospital here had nothing to do with it. We have always had excellent and dedicated mid-wives. It is all about getting a passport to Paradise, as the US was envisaged. I figure about 40% of so called Antiguans and Barbudans were born overseas. 40%.
