(Reuters) – The U.S. government is reviving a rule that could deny permanent residency to immigrants who use public benefits such as food stamps and Medicaid, the Department of Homeland Security said on Thursday.
The administration of President Donald Trump, determined to crack down on what it calls illegal immigration, says people seeking green cards should not be “public charges” who are primarily dependent on government subsistence.

The change — announced in an official post by the DHS — will take effect on September 18 this year.
The original rule, adopted in 2019 during Trump’s first term in power, significantly expanded the definition of a public charge to include anyone who received a government benefit for more than 12 months in any three-year period.
This broad approach was abandoned in 2022 during the Biden administration, which narrowed the grounds for potentially denying a green card to immigrants.
In a post on X, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services said the revived rule underlined the intent “that aliens in the United States be self-reliant and not dependent on taxpayer-funded government benefits.”

The politicians would hope that we don’t because it maintains the status quo and we see them riding and smiling in style without a care in the world. Let’s relax in this topic..Trump is right here…You can’t give foreigners Goverment assistance, and your own citizens can’t access those benefits. Therr is a lot of US citizens (single womens) can’t get food stamps because the year salary is sligly over the limits they consider to be “vulnerable”. Insted a young healthy latina come in illegally and..pumm..free food and free money quicker than any US born citizens
No Antiguan can tell me agree with this practice, none of us will accept to give foreigners over here any kind of benefits if our citizens don’t have it first. Any country should protect their citizen first.

What about those South Africans you just let in? and I know the Chinese and Japanese will always get their benefits, plus getting benefits in the US is not as simple as it sounds, I guarantee proof of legality and a whole lot of paperwork must be presented, then once you get on these programs whether in the US or the UK, the urgency to get off becomes a struggle, since these are benefits that was put in place to help but at the same time, keeps you down and stuck at a certain level.
