US Congressman Carlos Gimenez has publicly backed Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar over her sharp criticism of CARICOM and Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
In a post on X on Monday, Gimenez quoted Persad-Bissessar’s remarks dismissing the Caribbean’s long-standing “zone of peace” doctrine as “fakery,” and praised her support for US policy toward Venezuela, which he described as an “illegitimate, narco-dictatorship.”
The endorsement is one of the few public expressions of support from a US lawmaker since Persad-Bissessar aligned her administration more closely with Washington’s approach to Venezuela, including support for expanded US military and maritime operations in the region.
Persad-Bissessar has accused CARICOM of siding with what she called a “narco government” in Caracas and said Trinidad and Tobago would not support the bloc’s “zone of peace” position. She has also argued that Venezuela has repeatedly threatened Guyana and implied territorial claims involving Trinidad and Tobago.
Her stance marks a shift from Trinidad and Tobago’s traditional support for CARICOM’s emphasis on dialogue and non-militarisation, and has fuelled renewed regional debate over foreign policy alignment and security priorities.

“An organisation that chooses to disparage our greatest ally, the United States, but lends support to the Maduro narco-government headed by a dictator who has imprisoned and killed thousands of civilians and opposition members, as well as threatened two Caricom members, is one that has clearly lost its way,” Persad-Bissessar said in her statement.
I love this woman. Any person who say this is my hero. There are greedy idiots who think money and free oil is sufficient to forgive, forget and allow the tyranny of governments like Cuba, Venezuela, etcetera. My thing is this. I am not disputing that drugs are coming into the US from wherever it’s coming from BUT…..
You cannot only blame the places of origins, you must also hold your border protection officers responsible for not catching them.
The US claims to have all this technology but yet ship after ship and plane after plane transports drugs to the country and they are allowed in, yet we are not hearing any news about training, budget or increases in officers or resources.
It’s a joint effort I think, but your left hand and right hands are not connecting.
