Pringle Calls for Protest Over Social Security Crisis

Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle has issued a call for public action over what he described as a deepening financial crisis at Antigua and Barbuda’s Social Security Scheme, blaming decades of alleged mismanagement and misuse of funds by successive Antigua Labour Party (ALP) administrations.

In a public address, Pringle traced the roots of the crisis to what he said was a $550 million shortfall left behind by the ALP government between 1976 and 2004.

“For 28 years, the ALP administration raided $550 million from the coffers of Social Security and did not repay,” he said, referencing the findings of a 2009 actuarial review that projected the scheme’s reserves would be depleted by 2025.

He commended the former United Progressive Party (UPP) administration for attempting to address the crisis in 2010 by passing a $550 million bond, which he said generated revenue and injected $30 million into the scheme over four years.

Pringle sharply criticised the current Gaston Browne administration for failing to continue those efforts.

“For over a decade, the present Gaston Browne administration has failed to put revenue into the Social Security scheme by refusing to substantially service the $550 million bond,” he said.

He also accused the government of accumulating arrears for rent, contributions, and loan repayments owed to the fund.

“It is time to say no more. It is time to say hands off our Social Security,” Pringle declared, urging citizens and residents to join him in picketing the Parliament building on Thursday, 31 July at 8:30 a.m., when the government is expected to seek parliamentary approval for what he described as the “continued abuse” of the scheme.

The Antigua Barbuda government has not yet publicly responded to the Opposition Leader’s statement.

  1. Good to see that Mr. Pringle has done his research 👏

The real GRASSROOTS Leader and next PM

  2. @ V for Vendetta you are still alive. Well Pringle will be the next PM in your delusional dreams only. Keep dreaming.

  3. What I realize is that Gaston do these funny things to the opposition of not giving enough time to analyze the bills brought to parliament to the detriment of the opposition, because protesting and walking out of parliament is what Gaston is provoking all the time to his benefit. This creates a public perception that the opposition is incapable academically to debate Gaston and his gang of merry men, the opposition got to change their modus operandi and stop protest and walkout, and instead stand and speak to the country on any topic of bill that Gaston brings to parliament, even the alpha Nero should have been debated vigorously, because the opposition do more street discussion on it than in the chambers of parliament, Gaston is playing you all for fools, by short notice in parliament and bills, you have an English tongue and the bills are printed in English, the opposition must be hungry for publicity to show their acumen or polemics to the Antiguan voting public, instead if these protest get the supporters to come sit in parliament as Pringle proposed during the finance committee meeting. Opposition you need to show your ability and stop let Gaston control the narrative to trigger you into silence instead a open your mouth on the national media to gain support from the people.
During Pringle time and his inexperience and incapabilities it was his tool to save embarrassment to walk out of parliament and protest, but with people with such academic acumen as Sherfield Bowen and Richard Lewis and others the table if debate can be tipped, you can’t tell me that short noticed on parliament and bills could ever be bad as going out to represent Antigua on the world stage where you will be poked on domestic and international issues where you have to speak to the media, our parliament is just a small playground for your semantic gymnastics ability.
