The St. Peter Branch of the United Progressive Party (UPP) strongly endorses the sentiment that the late Asot Michael should be accorded a State Funeral, having died in parliamentary service.
The Branch also condemns as “small minded and petty” the decision of Prime Minister Gaston Browne to accord Mr. Michael an Official Funeral and rejects the reasons he has offered for doing so.
Mr. Michael represented this constituency for the past twenty (20) years and made history as the first Independent Candidate to win a parliamentary seat.
More than his record of victories, however, is the fact that in his entire tenure, Mr. Michael made no distinction between those who voted for him and those who openly supported the UPP.
In campaign season and out of it, he was always amenable to assisting any constituent he could and was known never to “pass a house” simply because it was “blue” – embodying what “representation” ought to be.
Further, Mr. Michael consistently agitated for improvements to be made to the facilities in St. Peter and was not afraid to criticize his own Administration when it failed to make them.
Accordingly, the UPP St. Peter Branch has no hesitation in endorsing the call for Mr. Michael to be properly recognized and his service properly respected by according him the State Funeral he has earned.

I am not in St. Peter’s. However, I have been saying. That he should be accorded a State Funeral. Gaston Browne and his Cabinet can make an exception,in my opinion. The people of that Constituency loved their Representative. State Funeral, yes.
