The opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) says it has moved swiftly to prepare for the upcoming by-election following the resignation of longtime St. Philip’s North representative Robin Yearwood, declaring itself “battle ready” and formally endorsing Alex Browne as its candidate.

Speaking on Observer Radio’s Night at Night, Harold Lovell confirmed that the party has already held a mobilization event in Willikies to signal what he described as “full endorsement” of Browne.

“Robin is now past tense,” Lovell said, pivoting quickly from the former MP’s departure to what he framed as the next political chapter. “We are now looking at present and future tense. And for that, we are saying, Alex Browne — it’s Alex next.”

Lovell’s remarks underscored the party’s effort to shift the narrative from tribute politics to electoral momentum, as visible signs of campaigning begin to emerge in the constituency. He referenced billboards and signage activity, indicating that both major parties are positioning themselves ahead of the official announcement of the by-election date.

The UPP, he said, is responding in kind.

“We know that they’re priming up,” Lovell noted, adding that the opposition is ensuring it is prepared for what could be a competitive contest. “We are also making sure that we are battle ready.”

The Willikies gathering, according to Lovell, was designed not only to endorse Browne but to energize supporters and signal that the party’s ground operation is active. He described the effort as part of a broader strategy to remain present and relevant in the constituency, crediting his campaign team for developing creative approaches to voter engagement.

While the seat has long been associated with Yearwood, whose resignation after 50 years in Parliament triggered the pending by-election, Lovell’s comments suggest the UPP intends to frame the contest as a forward-looking choice rather than a referendum on the past.

The by-election is expected to take place within the constitutionally prescribed period following the vacancy, setting the stage for what is shaping up to be an early and visible campaign in St. Philip’s North.

  1. This by-election is a pivotal moment for Antiguan politics going forward. This will gauge whether or not the electorate has learned from the narrow defeat of the UPP at the last General Election. Here’s why:

    1) The narrow defeat highlighted that the country was yearning for change

    2) Prior to the election, Antiguans were fed-up to the back teeth of delayed wages, delayed pensions and delayed overtime

    3) Fast-tracking and giving amnesties to former illegal immigrants was fundamentally wrong and to the detriment to the culture of the indigenous population

    4) The lack of financial transparency has also upset honest hardworking Antiguans

    5) Gerrymandering needs to be seriously looked into to ensure votes are not moved into vulnerable constituencies

As I mentioned earlier, this is a pivotal moment, and let’s hope we’ve learnt from the past. Never forget the popular saying that goes:

“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”

WE ANTIGUANS HAVE BEEN DULY WARNED!!!

  2. Brixy boy..what pivotal…I admire your tenacity as you are… yet to relinquish the audacious battle in defense of the upP

    Keep trodding’

  3. I am looking forward for this meeting listening to Mr Baltimore stating that he would continue the Legacy of Sir Robin Yearwood I’m trying to find what this gentleman have done for our community. ROBIN NESS LESSNESS

  4. At present, none of these ABLP members can be trusted, both those who already have a seat in parliament, and those who are seeking leadership.

None, not one of them stood up for the people in the last 5 years in all the major scandals and debacles this administration have taken the Antiguan people through.

The two latest ones were the car theft and the US visa restrictions. Not one of them come forward and stand for justice in bringing those fraudsters that stole over 15mil in cars to justice.

Not even one of them stood up and fight for the rights and the Antiguan partnership for our vital roll to the US agenda, none.

Hate Donald Trump all you want, but this Visa thing is bigger than y’all may think, and none of these ABLP so-called “care takers” couldn’t even take care of those very vital needs for all Antiguan’s.

    They cannot be trusted..just can’t.

If you are afraid to voice the truth, you shouldn’t be in any leadership role, and that’s why I know this ABLP administration cannot be trusted. They speak way more lies that truth, and that’s the reason that little Antigua is in the mess that it’s in.

Some people think that punishment for sins/lying is in some distant future, not realizing that the consequences of sin is immediate, and the repercussions of all the blatant lies after lies by this administration to the people, must be punished immediately.

Antigua must get rid of this lying political culture, and it starts now.

Truth truth truth, has to be demanded and come back in Antigua.Too many dishonest people in high places, just too many, and it’s suffocating the islands.
